Problem
How do students’ speaking/discussion skills translate to sustained on-demand writing?
Hypothesis
If students are able to engage authentically and regularly with thinking routines, then they will be able to articulate their argument and strengthen their analytical and on-demand writing skills.
Target group
AP LIT - these students not only need to have passed the ELA regents by the end of HS, but they also take a three hour exam at the end of AP Literature where they have to write three on-demand essays and complete 55 multiple choice questions.
Planning & resources
Planning Resource
I used resources from Harvard's Thinking Routines database to plan my research.
Baseline data
Students have practiced on-demand writing for all three AP LIT exams so I’ve been able to monitor their progress all year. For this inquiry cycle though, I focused on Q2 (Prose fiction) because the last benchmark is based on Act 3, Scene 4 in Hamlet.
Measuring success
To measure success, I looked at:
Hamlet on-demand writing benchmark
AP LIT exam scores (out in July)
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Incorporating on-demand writing as a practice early in the school year
Slowly build up students’ writing stamina & analytical skills
Articulate what’s at stake (AP Lit Exam + ELA Regents)
