Problem
Some students are struggling with completing work, and I want to see if they have more choice in how they will be assessed, if more students will participate in completing a culminating task. (We always have the same students complete work, but I would like to get more of the strugglers to complete the performance tasks if they are given a choice.)
Hypothesis
If students work in a more engaging manner and with something they are interested in for a performance task, then they will more likely complete this performance task of their choice, as measured by a standards based rubric.
Target group
Students in 10th grade ELA who don’t typically complete performance tasks. A total of 33 students across three ELA periods.

Baseline data
The previous unit’s performance task will be used as a baseline to compare completion rates with the completion rates of this unit’s choice board performance task. The specific students that didn’t complete performance tasks previously will be compared.
Measuring success
Success is measured based on the completion rates of the specific students being tracked.

Overall findings & impact
We only had a little bit of success, with some students in each period completing the Performance Task compared to the previous marking period. There were a total of 7 students who submitted the final Performance Task Choice Board out of the 33 targeted students who had not previously submitted any work for their final assessment.
Even though students were given 10 choices, that varied in levels of creativity with a small writing component, that were based on the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, which was read as a class out loud daily, an alarming 26 out of 33 did not attempt any of the choices.
Next time, I will have students engage in a check - point where they will show their progress towards the chosen Performance Task. I will design it in a way where they will work on their PT from the beginning of the unit and provide their progress to teachers and perhaps students/peers at least twice before they submit their final version. A grade will also be given for these check - points to help keep students motivated and accountable for their work.
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Have a check - in point with grade
Have students present or review each other’s work before submitting a final version
Have students work towards the project all unit
