Problem
I have been leading a REWARDS literacy group with five freshmen male students from 2/6/23 - 6/12/23. We met three days a week. We did not meet for three days every single week. We tried our best. What progress have we made with regards to improving literacy levels throughout our time in REWARDS? In all classes?
Hypothesis
After completing 24 REWARDS lessons and 2 built in check up lessons, the ELA & Algebra I GPAs of the 5 students I have in REWARDS (and that I teach in ELA & Algebra I), will increase AND the 5 students will make progress within the REWARDS program as showcased by the 2 built in check up assessments.

Measuring success
We measured success by tracking students’ progress on every activity within the REWARDS lessons. Those activities are as follows:
Reading Parts of Real Words
Circling Prefixes & Suffixes
Underlining Vowels in Words
Spelling Dictation
Correcting Close Approximations
Illustrated Academic Vocabulary
Prefixes & Suffixes
We went about tracking the progress of students’ by using the REWARDS assessment system:
A = Absent
1 = Inaccurate
2 = Accurate, but not Automatic
3 = Accurate & Automatic
Overall findings & impact
Successful in implementing REWARDS for the first time. I think once I became more comfortable with the lessons, I was able to successfully teach each lesson activity. My pacing improved as I went further along in the program.
Unsuccessful in sticking to meeting 3 days a week, every week. In the beginning, I did a better job of meeting three days a week. This became more of a challenge (we only met twice in May).
During a given REWARDS lesson, successful in reminding students how the lesson activities in REWARDS are applicable to the class activities in ELA, Algebra I, and their other classes. I think I could have done a better job in being more explicit making these connections during our ELA & Algebra I classes.
For next year, I am curious when REWARDS will be implemented. I know it will be implemented 3 days a week. However, I don’t know how this will look. I think it will be once a week during WIN, once a week during a student’s class (when I have a prep), and maybe once a week during Advisory. I am unsure, but curious. I am excited to roll out REWARDS for a second time!
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Checking in with myself, Julie, or Pri to talk about the REWARDS program and how to best implement strategies and skills covered in REWARDS in the classroom setting
Sit in on a REWARDS lesson next year!
Try implementing 1-2 strategies from REWARDS in your classroom!
One-on-one assistance
Check-ins
Teacher-led small group work
After implementing the 1-2 strategies, meet with myself, Julie, or Pri to discuss glows, grows, and next steps
