Problem
Students are not participating in discussion as much as I would like them to. This has caused questioning and discussion to fall flat sometimes and class to not be as lively.
Hypothesis
If students engage in discussion protocols such as my favorite mistake(written and orally)/notice and wonder, then they will be able to engage in discussion more actively, as measured by teacher collected data (exit tickets/first fives) and tracker.
Target group
All of my geometry classes as I really want all of them to be more engaged in discussion.
Planning & resources
Strategies to try from Pri and our (Tobey / Jessica) brains:
My favorite mistake
Error analysis
Notice and Wonder protocol
Teacher mistakes
Baseline data
Google form about discussion in math class
Measuring success
More students (higher numbers) are participating in discussion both classwide and small group
More students are taking risks to answer questions they may be unsure of in discussion
Overall findings & impact
I found that my students were more engaged and excited to speak in the classroom.
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Working with a co-teacher to plan the roll out
Using live student data to drive in the moment my favorite mistakes
Use notice and wonders to launch a new topic
