Q: What is optometry?
A: An Optometrist is a primary eyecare practitioner whose practice may include prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing ocular disease and disorders, referral to specialists, and co-management with ophthalmologists. Optometrists have a variety of career options such as owning a clinic, contributing to research, working in a hospital, and teaching.
Q: Where can I study optometry?
A: The only English speaking school of optometry in Canada is at the University of Waterloo, and if you qualify for the French program, you can also study at the University of Montreal. The United States of America is home to 24 optometry programs. There are several international optometry programs but they may require a bridging program to practice in North America, so check with the particular program if this is needed.
Q: How can I join an optometry program?
A: Certain prerequisite courses, majority/entire BSc degree, entrance exam, essay questions, interview and other requirements are common to most programs. Learn more in the "resources" section!
Q: What can I expect during my optometry education?
A: Most traditional programs are four years long consisting of lecture and lab classes, as well as with clinical experience especially towards the end of the four years. Some accelerated programs are three years long, some programs offer an optional additional year of residency, and some programs may offer dual degree options.
