Preparing Students for Lifelong Learning

We would argue that there are two key elements to lifelong learning:

• Knowing where to seek the information necessary to address a question that arises at work, at home, or in one's life as a citizen. This is addressed under: Addressing Information Overload

• Knowing how to evaluate the information they find, and address any conflicts they confront. We discuss the value of addressing conflicts in Teaching the Conflicts and how to integrate across different scholarly insights in Teaching Interdisciplinary Integration

Ria van der Lecq, "Self-authorship Characteristics of Learners in the Context of an Interdisciplinary Curriculum: Evidence from Reflections," Issues in Interdisciplinary Studies 34: 79-108, describes results from a student survey at the University of Utrecht which show that interdisciplinary students become self-directed learners, come to see multiple perspectives, and pursue a breadth of understanding.
