Dr. Tae J. Kwon has been appointed as the University of Alberta Engineering Research Chair in Intelligent and Resilient Transportation Systems for a five-year term beginning in July 2026.
The Research Chair will support a major research program that builds on the City of Edmonton–NSERC Alliance partnerships while advancing a broader vision for safer, more climate-resilient, and more efficient transportation systems. The program will focus on developing practical, data-driven solutions that support transportation agencies in addressing emerging mobility, safety, infrastructure, and climate-resilience challenges.
By integrating sensor innovation, multimodal artificial intelligence, and geospatial analytics, the research program aims to generate deployable tools for winter road maintenance, traffic monitoring, and infrastructure decision-making. These tools will support improved transportation operations in Edmonton while offering broader relevance for municipalities and transportation agencies facing similar challenges across Canada and beyond.
This appointment reflects the continued growth of intelligent transportation systems research at the University of Alberta and strengthens ongoing efforts to translate advanced sensing, AI, and data analytics into practical solutions for resilient transportation infrastructure.
