Why participate in our study

We know that DSL/AL settings have very unique features and challenges they encounter - which can be much different from LTC homes and community settings. We are the only team that has specifically investigated the impact of COVID-19 on DSL/AL homes and on family caregivers in these homes. We believe that is important to give DSL/AL homes and the family/friend caregivers of residents within these homes a voice! This is an opportunity for DSL homes to (a) voice their experiences with COVID-19 and related public health measures, (b) contribute to improvements of future responses to COVID-19 or other infectious diseases, and (c) learn about their Family/Friend caregivers' experiences and concerns.

What is involved

This study aims to assess the impact of COVID-19 and related public health measures on (1) Designed Supportive Living Homes in Alberta and Assisted Living Homes British Columbia and (2) Family/Friend Caregivers of residents living in these homes. To do this we are asking homes to:

1. Complete a survey on your Home's experiences with and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey aims to assess how well you felt prepared, what challenges you encountered and how you responded to these challenges.

2. Help us reach out to Family/Friend caregivers of residents living in your home who we hope to recruit for a Family/Friend Caregiver survey. You can help by either by (a) disseminating our study information/materials via your internal mailing lists, (b) hanging posters with our study information in your home and/or handing study flyers to visiting family/friend caregivers and/or (c) contacting family/friend caregivers and ask them for permission to pass on their contact details to the study team.

We understand with how busy homes are with COVID that completing both 1 and 2 is not always possible. If you are a home that is only interested in completing the facility survey we can arrange that as well. However there are benefits to completing both. We have email scripts, study materials/posters/flyers, etc. ready for you to disseminate. If you decide that option (c) is something you can do, we can offer that you call in an additional staff member to help with contacting Family/Friend Caregivers and we will refund hours of this staff member to you.
