On Monday July 6, the U of A Bridging Divides team got together for a Summer Social.
The social started with presentations from two Bridging Divides team members who had participated in the Bridging Divides Scholar Exchange Fellowship: Yamini Bhatt (TMU) and Nimil Hussain (U of A). Both participants gave short presentations about their projects and their Scholar Exchange experiences.
The Bridging Divides Scholar Exchange Fellowship is open to PhD students and early career scholars and supports short-term research visits among partner universities in the Bridging Divides network.
Yamini is a Toronto Metropolitan University scholar under the Immigrant Health and Wellbeing theme.
In her presentation, Yamini outlined her doctoral research looking into cardiovascular risk prevention for south asian immigrant women, briefly discussing her research methods, preliminary findings and the significance of the research.
Yamini then spoke about her contributions to and experiences with the following two projects within the Immigrant Health and Wellbeing theme:
Yamini ended her presentation by sharing her experience with the Scholar Exchange Fellowship highlighting the collaborative opportunities provided to her by the program.
Nimil is a University of Alberta scholar under the Place and Infrastructure theme who recently visited Toronto Metropolitan University for his Scholar Exchange.
Nimil started his presentation with a scoping review of the SSHRC funded research he contributed to: Newcomer Settlement and Integration: Exploring New Governance Models.
Nimil then discussed the highlights of his Scholar Exchange experience and how it enabled his ongoing research. He highlighted his academic engagement experience at the Global Migration Institute as a unique opportunity to connect with many different international researchers.
Following the presentations, the team had the opportunity to mingle, discuss their work and make connections with one another over a catered lunch.
The social events provide an opportunity to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of the Bridging Divides project by encouraging collaboration between researchers from different research themes.
Thank you to our presenters, attendees and organizers! We look forward to the next social.
