Meet Avery Z.

Experiential Learning Program Support

Alberta School of Business

Summer 2023 (8 month term)

"For the past 4 months I have been a member of the Experiential Learning team at the Alberta School of Business, where we encourage learning through hands-on experiences. In this role, I coordinate and support various career exploration and networking events while also contributing to other Experiential Learning initiatives. This role provides me with the unique opportunity to engage with employer partner representatives, collaborate with staff, and connect with students across campus.

I organize both on-campus and off-campus events, such as visits to local organizations like the Edmonton Oilers to get a snapshot of the industry, or casual networking events such as the Masters of Business Administration Brunches. Due to the nature of event planning, I often work closely with professionals across all fields, which can be challenging at times. Especially visiting external companies, where different environments are quite overwhelming. Despite this, my position has really strengthened my confidence and interpersonal skills through frequent interactions with new people. I have so much fun every day!

The most important thing that I’ve learned from my work experience is that it’s okay to try new things. even if you don’t have past experience. This role is completely different to anything I’ve ever done before, which has allowed me to discover new things that I enjoy and might even pursue in the future. I would advise new AWE students to not compare themselves to others and be confident in their own skills. In my field, I meet a lot of extraordinary people that have multiple degrees and years of experience. It’s important to not diminish yourself, everyone has something unique to offer.

Avery is a fourth-year student majoring in Science, Technology and Society and English. She is currently on a work term with the Alberta School of Business as Experiential Learning Program Support.
