Luck's Place in Your Career Journey

It may be Friday the 13th, but let’s talk about luck. Many students contact the AWE team because they want more clarity and certainty about their careers. We often get questions like, “What kind of a job can I get with my degree?” or “What steps should I take to secure a job in my chosen field?” It’s totally normal to feel pressure to choose a specific career path, especially as graduation inches closer, but sometimes, being in the right place at the right time and taking chances as they pop up can open your eyes to new and exciting possibilities!

Planned happenstance is a different way of looking at your career journey and places value on preparing for and accommodating unplanned or serendipitous events that can create new opportunities, experiences or knowledge. By developing a wide variety of transferable skills and seeing chance events and lucky breaks as opportunities for exploration, you will only open more doors for yourself!

Have you been considering joining that really cool student group or volunteering for an on-campus or off-campus organization that does great community work? How about attending an information session or event, or even speaking to the person who sits beside you in every class? While there is nothing wrong with pursuing a particular career, taking these seemingly small opportunities when they present themselves can lead to additional chances for self-discovery and career exploration!
