Resume and Cover Letter Review 101

In case you just joined us, it might be helpful to know that at least one resume and cover letter review is mandatory before you start applying for positions on the AWE Job Board in campusBRIDGE. Additionally, if you have been in AWE for a term or longer, you might already know that the more your documents are reviewed, the stronger they will be.

How do I book my resume and cover letter review?
One-on-one appointments can be booked through the UofA Career Centre or through your Work Experience Coordinator. You can also sign up for and attend a resume and cover letter workshop, which will be promoted in this newsletter in the coming weeks. For a complete list of options, please refer to the AWE Student Handbook

How do you prepare for your appointment?
If you have booked a one-on-one session with AWE or Career Centre staff, you will be asked to submit your documents at least 1 business day before your appointment so your Advisor has time to gather feedback for your appointment. If you attend a workshop, you will be asked to bring your documents with you. Along with your documents, you can choose to include a job posting - something you plan to apply for, or something similar to a job you want in the future, so your Advisor can show you how to tailor your documents to the job posting (an essential step, especially when applying for competitive AWE positions).

What happens during a resume and cover letter review?

During the appointment or workshop, your Advisor will address the four main components of a resume: format, wording, content, and presentation. They will help you make adjustments/enhancements to all four areas so your resume is the strongest it can be. They will also help you structure your cover letter to be concise, specific, and clear.

How many appointments should I access?
One appointment or workshop is mandatory before you start applying for positions; however, each person who looks at your document will bring new perspectives. Therefore, we encourage you to seek advice from different staff members in the coming weeks and months. Our ultimate goal is for you to reach a point where you no longer need our help because you have become an expert!
