Make a Great First Impression - with Your Documents

The summer job hunt is in full swing, and as you prepare to press the “submit” button on each application, we want you to think about application conduct. From the moment you submit your documents to the actual online or in-person interview, you are establishing a first impression with the employer that can positively or negatively affect your chance of securing the position. Here are just a few pointers to keep in mind in order to set yourself up for success.

Emails matter. When corresponding with an employer, start with a greeting (e.g.: “Good morning” or “Good afternoon”), and use professional language throughout your email. This means avoiding slang, abbreviations and an overly casual tone. It is also common practice to conclude your email with a sign-off such as “Take care” or “Thank you,” followed by your name. Before sending your email, reread your message to ensure that it is clear and that you have addressed all of their questions or action items, if any. We strongly suggest putting these tips into practice when corresponding with AWE staff, instructors and other university staff members so you become accustomed to using different voices for different audiences.

Find your voice. If you apply for any position, there is a chance that you may be called by an employer at some point during the selection process. To be prepared, create a professional and warm voicemail greeting, and practice using a professional and pleasant tone to contribute to a great first impression. Consider practicing your professional voice the next time you meet with your Work Experience Coordinator.

Pass the vibe check. During an in-person or virtual interview, your appearance will directly impact everyone, from the reception staff who greet you to the members of the interview panel. By wearing “business casual” attire and looking your best, you are indirectly communicating your seriousness about the position. And a hot tip for cold weather is to remove your outerwear before sitting down for an in-person interview! Maintaining an open body posture and being present during the interview will also contribute to a great first impression. Although we don’t expect you to dress professionally during an AWE meeting (although you are welcome to during a mock job interview), try focusing on maintaining an open body posture and practice active listening skills.

This list is not exhaustive, but we hope that it has helped you think about how you can put your best foot forward throughout the selection process. If you have any questions, reach out to your Work Experience Coordinator.
