Minor Residential Development Team
City of Edmonton Development Services
Winter 2025 (8 month term)
What did you learn from your work experience?
“My role was focused on permit approvals. I worked with the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw to approve greenfield houses, communicated with people applying for Home-Based Business Permits and reviewed applications for Secondary Suite additions or Basement developments. This position gave me strong experiences in using the Zoning Bylaw, understanding city processes and recognizing the role of council. The work was highly autonomous and independent, which quickly taught me time management skills and how to solve problems on my own.”
Second Slide of Post: What advice do you have for new AWE students?
"If I could give anyone starting a work term a piece of advice, it would be to take as many opportunities as possible. This doesn’t just mean projects you can help out on - although that is very important - but also social opportunities. If you’re invited for coffee or to join a lunch, don’t pass it up. Making strong connections with coworkers is not only important but also fun. When you’ve built a positive and social workplace, the work itself becomes better.
Try new things and explore discomfort. If something sounds interesting, ask questions, offer to help and be dependable."
