Bachelor of Arts in Planning
Stephen graduated with a BA Planning degree and is now a Lawyer working at Brownlee LLP. See how AWE supported Stephan’s career.
Looking back, how has AWE impacted the direction you went in your career?
"AWE provided me with the basis to access a great first work experience opportunity in my field, which helped me leap into even bigger and better opportunities further down the line. Through receiving support before, during and after that initial work experience opportunity, I was able to successfully navigate the challenges that working in a professional setting for the first time presents. I also made the most of this first opportunity, which not only helped me as my career progressed, but also started off my professional development on a really positive note."
What skills did you develop through your work experience that you still use today?
"During my first work experience, I worked at the City of Edmonton and was encouraged to take on a variety of different projects regarding planning and development. This not only broadened my knowledge of my field of work, but also taught me how to balance different priorities in the workplace and manage the stress that inevitably accompanies work sometimes. I also learned a lot about how to navigate bureaucracy and engage with the public professionally. I love being able to share what I've learned outside of work too, which has allowed me to provide a service to different community groups over the years."
How has having an Arts degree allowed you to advance your career to where it is today?
I really loved the variety of classes I got to access in my Arts degree. There's that tired joke about how useless an Arts Degree is. But, I have found my Arts degree so useful. It taught me so much about presenting ideas to different audiences and writing effectively. I learned a lot about analyzing legislation and policy, helping me understand the big picture and how to get stuff done. I also had a lot more fun in Arts. I wanted to have a career where my bread and butter was writing, speaking and engaging with people, their problems and their ideas on a day-to-day basis.
