Community Service Opportunities

The University of Alabama in Huntsville is a community of "Volunteer Chargers" students, faculty, and staff members who give back to the campus and the Huntsville community on a weekly basis.

Organization: Downtown Rescue Mission Agape Store

Activity: Sorting donations for the homeless shelter. Downtown Rescue Mission is in real need of volunteers to sort through donation for their clothing store that gives clothing free to the community. The center also has food that needs to be sorted,They have a lot of donations that require sorting to hang in the store for people to shop for their needs. DRM needs help immediately and looking for any amount of volunteers.

Organization: Hospice Family Care

Activity: Hospice family cares new inpatient care facility is looking for volunteer groups to come in and brighten up the facility with their energy.There would be very limited patient interaction and just a short group volunteer training required.

The purpose of the volunteer project groups is to help with simple task to support the staff. Examples would be coming in and preparing comfort baskets for the families, cutting donated flowers and arranging them in vases to be put around the facility. Activity: We need help at our thrift shop, adoption events, fundraising events, socializing animals, fostering and housekeeping duties.

Organization: CASA Madison City

Activity: Help with the Garden, Building Ramps, & Assist with Yard Work. CASA (Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound) is a non-profit agency located in Huntsville, Alabama that provides services to individuals age 60 and older and to the homebound (wheelchair and bed bound) of all ages since 1979.

Activity: Helping organize the warehouse of school supplies that goes to local schools and teachers. Groups 10-30 are needed.

Organization: Burritt on the Mountain

Activity:

St. Patrick’s Day Parade-March 16, 2019, from 10:30-1:00. Meet Burritt staff downtown (Corner of Holmes and Clinton, Lot K) to prep for the parade. Volunteers will carry the banner and share handouts about Burritt events with the crowds. We will have a dress code for the event.

CAMP COUNSELORS-March 18-22, 2019, from 8:15-2:30, 1:45-5:30, 1-5 days. Do you enjoy working with kids, creating crafts, playing games and hiking trails? This volunteer job is for you! This is an easy way to earn your volunteer hours for school organizations. Choose one or more shifts and days.

SPRING FARM DAYS-April 5-7, 2019, half day and all day shifts available. Dress up in historic clothes and help us share the past with school groups and the general public.

EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA-Saturday, April 20, 2019, 10:30-3:00. Hand out Easter Eggs (trick or treat style).

GARDENING GURUS-Flexible time with a group or on an individual basis. We can set it up to work with your schedule.

Organization: Huntsville Botanical Gardens

Activity: Volunteer for an evening or multiple evenings. Volunteer Activities: Outdoor/Indoor Hosts, Parking Assistants, Create Glass Balloons, Translators (If you know Chinese), Guest Services, and Gift Shop.

Organization: The ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Lou Gehrig's Disease) Association Alabama Chapter

Activity: The Wine and Dine is an evening of fine dining at Burritt on the Mountain, featuring a gourmet menu with each course paired with a complementary wine, live music and both silent and live auctions. We will need help with setup and decorating starting that morning, cleanup after the event, escorting guests to their tables, auction setup and checkout, etc. Volunteers will receive a free meal!
