Paragraph:

The British soldiers arrived in America to restore order after colonists resisted the new taxes. It is clear that the colonists were annoyed by the British being there. Colonists were upset that British soldiers were taking jobs they felt were rightfully theirs. The citizens of Boston would argue that the soldiers were abusing them, but from the evidence we know that the colonists were the ones causing the problems. Colonists called the soldiers "Lobsterbacks." This word was meant to make fun of the British for their red coats. In the 1770's, Lobsters were not a special and expensive food like they are today. Back then, lobsters were considered pests and were annoying. Colonists would pick fights with off duty British soldiers. Captain Preston points out in his writing that, "one day some rope-makers insultingly asked soldiers to empty a vault." Today we recognize the word vault as a safe, or a place to store money. In 1770, a vault was another word for an outhouse. Saying this to a British soldier was very insulting. The tormenting reached it's peak when not only insults were exchanged, but colonists began throwing clubs and snowballs at the soldiers which led to violence.
