It is time! The school year just wouldn't be complete unless we make time to learn about some of the animals from Africa, about animating The Lion King and about The Lion King on Broadway! Kids can click on my little lion picture to take them to a "classroom" with some very interesting videos about the things I just mentioned. Enjoy!
Our first grade students have just started practicing some sketches in their very own sketchbooks! The first drawings they are going to try is a forest animal. The students are using the tablet device in class and they are choosing an animal to draw by clicking on the drawing above.
Our talented young students have just started one of our favorite annual projects called
"Birdies on a Wire"!
Just for fun, I thought I'd share the drawing lesson with you here - I'd like to encourage you to grab a pencil and a piece of paper and sketch along with us!
The students have started their "Birdies on a Wire" drawing lesson. We'll be using our watercolor paints to finish up these projects during the next few weeks.
Click on the photo to the left for a few additional drawing lessons you and your child might want to try over Winter Break. Put on your favorite pair of slippers and prop your feet up! Grab a pencil and some paper and have fun with a few of these sketches. Wishing all the best!
Love, Mrs. Broaderick
For the month of December we are taking inspiration from a song that was a favorite of mine when I was a little girl. It was called, "The Marvelous Toy". Our students have been asked to listen to the song, to imagine what the marvelous toy looked like and finally, to recreate the marvelous toy from their imagination on paper with pencil and crayon. In the lessons to follow, we will also create the toy again, but we will try other art supplies, such as construction paper or watercolor paint. Students will get to experiment with a variety of art mediums to express their own original ideas. I believe we have some future toy designers right here, at the Villages Charter School!
Click on the music notes below to hear the song.
Click on an artist's palette to visit some First Grade Online Galleries and see what our students have been inspired to create!
Click on the video snippet above for a peek into Ms. Skinner's class....they just finished up the Cow and Piggie Projects!
Our first activity in Art Class during Camp Innovation will be a student's very own "Safari Sketchbook". They can take it and the pencil with them on all their animal observing adventures!
Here is a video of the monkey drawing lesson we plan to sketch in our Safari Sketchbooks!
This year's elementary school reading theme is "Wild About Reading"....and we are ready to "Get WILD about ART, too!
Please click through the slides above to see a few examples of the student work that has been created while we work from home. You can enlarge this window by clicking the second icon from the right.
During our drawing lessons, students were asked to pick one from the three they were given....Mrs. Broaderick was so surprised at how many students created ALL three! Here is Ashley with all 3 drawing from Lesson #1, a robot, a castle and a house!
Here is Anjeni also with all 3!
Your Special Area Teachers LOVE you and MISS you!
Our Online Learning Art Lessons are just one assignment a week, because traditionally I would only see your child/ren once a week. My week will run from Wednesday - Wednesday, since we "started" online learning on a Wednesday, March, 25th.
Please know, I'm still available through my school Email: melle.broaderick@tvcs.org if you have any questions or concerns. Missing you! Sincerely, Mrs. Broaderick
Boys and Girls, you do not have to Email me photos of you working on your art projects....but I certainly have been thrilled to receive some!
Some of our friends have been working creatively at home! I love it!
DID YOU KNOW..... Mrs. Broaderick likes to make her own gift tags, greeting cards, postcards and envelopes? SO, if your little one would like to write me a letter, or draw me a picture, I'd be thrilled to receive it in the mail! The BEST part is, I'd be happy to write them back! :o)

Of course, you and your student can always reach me by my school email, and send me a photo of any drawings or art projects, but I'm sure you remember how fun it was to get something in the mail addressed just to you when you were little!
Yep, these are my favorite colors and this is my favorite time of year in the Art room!
These are samples that are on the drying rack today!
Some Kindergarten classes will be finishing up their giraffe drawings with watercolor paint, while other Kindergarten classes will practice their scissors skills while they make a paper fringe for their lion drawing. First grade students will cut their own paper to complete their lion's mane.
I'm so proud of the students' hard work!
The Kindergarten students have just complete their Snowman in Watercolor paintings.
MY favorite part about these snowmen paintings? The bright colors!
The STUDENTS favorite part about these snowmen? The huge size!
The First Grade students have just completed their mixed media Poppies.
The kindergarten students started a guided drawing lesson w/ Mrs. Broaderick and so many of them turned out adorable! What you can't see, which is one reason the students were so excited....is.....we are drawing these on really "big" paper!! Next lesson, we add watercolor paint in bright colors! *Photo to the right is Mrs. Broaderick's sample. :o)
When our talented Kindergarten students complete a little bumble bee painting such as these, they are practicing some pretty challenging skills. Keep in mind that the lesson starts with a "guided whole group drawing lesson". This is when a young child is attentive while a teacher is drawing and they are patiently waiting their turn to draw. Instruction is given step by step, so if they aren't watching they might miss something. Once they've finished drawing with a pencil, there isn't much time to celebrate because now they are asked to "draw" it again by "hiding all pencil lines with a black crayon"! That's usually lesson one, during the second lesson, students will paint. But not just paint; they will learn that an artist usually begins with a "light color" and a good discussion about colors that are "light" and colors that are "dark" begins. Once this is mastered, students still get to learn that there is a correct way to hold and use a paintbrush. During the early years of their lives, students use paintbrushes like a scrub brush, pressing hard and w/o any consistent direction. A paintbrush is much different! Lesson two usually is only painting with yellow. By lesson three, students will complete the red and blue paint in their project. But we aren't done yet; students will also be introduced to the concept of 2 dimensional objects compared to 3 dimensional objects when they learn how to pop-up their bumble bee drawing! When all of these skills are taken into consideration, it's pretty amazing to think that these adorable bumble bees are created by Kindergarteners!!
Inspired by our Nautical Reading Theme this year, some first grade classes completed Lighthouse Landscapes! Other first grade classes completed their Jellyfish using a fun salt technique that looked like bubbles in the ocean after the watercolor paint dried.
If you're feeling a little crabby.....these cuties will cheer you up! Kindergarten students in Ms. Moore's class and Ms. Frye's class just finished their first paintings in Art class today! (Sept. 17th) After all the kindergarten students have started this project, I'll be sure to post the "How to draw a crab" drawing lesson here on the Teacher Connection page!
Thank you so much for attending! We appreciate you spending your precious evening time with us!
This week in the Art Room, we start our Reading Kick-off Projects! Inspired by this year's Reading Theme, "Sail Into a Good Book", Kindergarten students will make hats with sailing ships on them. First Graders will make their choice of a pirate hat or a mermaid crown. Students who choose pirates will also make a parrot puppet and students who choose mermaids will also make starfish wands.
The Reading Kick-off is an annual event when our media specialist reveal our school Accelerated Reader reading goal. Several of our teachers and staff put together a little play for the students. The boys and girls are also learning a song in Music class that they will get to sing during the program. It's an event the students always remember!
The first grade students have started to add the white paint to the hats that they will wear to the Reading Kickoff that we will attend near the end of September.
First graders will make their choice of a pirate hat or a mermaid crown.
First graders will also pick if they are making a parrot puppet or a starfish wand.
Kindergarten students will make "ships on the ocean" headbands.
We've read the second book by Peter Reynolds called, "ish", about a little boy's drawings that don't have to be perfect....it's okay if they are "ish". So, kids, remember, your drawing can be "mouse-ish"!
For example, if the first grade samples below were being scored on, "I can develop good craftsmanship skills through practice using a variety of media and techniques.", which is a standard you can find in Skyward and on the report card each 9 weeks, this is how they would be scored:
"Exceeding grade level expectation" during the beginning of the school year is unusual, but not impossible. In this case, the student outlined with black crayon neatly and painted carefully.
This would be a "proficient" sample at the beginning of the school year. The student outlined most of their drawings with black crayon and experimented with making secondary colors. The student went out of the lines a little while painting, but again typical for this time of year.
"Developing" is where we usually find most first graders during the month of September. Their fine motor skills might not be strong enough yet for tracing pencil w/ crayon and many students are still getting the knack of how much paint should be in a brush and when should they get more. (This is an example of a student running out of paint, so they just pressed harder try to "scrub" the brush.)
A little about Mrs. Broaderick
If we haven't met yet, my name is Melle (rhymes with Belle) and it isn't short for anything. It's a family name and one I'm very proud to have. The students call me Mrs. Broaderick :o) . Also a name I'm very proud to have. My husband is a paramedic/fire fighter and full-time paramedic instructor at College of Central Florida in Ocala. We have two beautiful daughters. My oldest daughter is a graduate of VCS and just recently, a college graduate from Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. My youngest daughter will be a senior at VHS in the coming school year and is involved in musical theater and chorus there. I've been the Primary Center Art teacher now for 14 years, but I have also been a classroom teacher in first and second grades. Although I loved teaching in the classroom, I REALLY love teaching Art and especially with this age. So, I am very grateful to be teaching your child and you'll find, I take it very seriously. We will do a whole lot more than just coloring this year!
If you ever have concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I can easily be reached my our school E-mail, but you can also leave a message with our receptionist and I'll be glad to return your call.
Thank you so much,
Mrs. Broaderick

In Kindergarten...
Kindergarten student artwork was on display this year during their "For the Love of Music" concert last week.
The Kindergarten students will start another favorite this week called "Birdies on a Wire"
In First Grade....
Here is a little snippet of what it is like in the Art room while some first graders finish up their birdhouse paintings. :o)
These "Songbirds at Home" were finished just this week!
When Kindergarten student Karter James saw this magazine at the grocery store, he was very excited to tell his mom all things he learned about Walt Disney while in Art class!
When Mrs. Broaderick read Tyler Watts' t-shirt during Literacy Week, she gave him a high-five because Art is her favorite "sport" too!
When Jacy Torres shared her shirt that mixed primary colors to make secondary colors, during Literacy Week, Mrs. Broaderick was tickled pink!
When Kindergarten student Jackson Wang shared his homemade animation booklet with Mrs. Broaderick, she became very "animated" when she jumped up and down with excitement!
Feeling inspired this month by the "For the Love of Music", Kindergarten concert, the students are learning about warm and cool colors as they complete these beautiful watercolor projects.
Keeping with the same music and watercolor theme, the first graders will finish these "songbird" projects by the end of the month! :o)
On January 15th, we will start our unit on the History of Animation. The first grade students will practice a simple animation of their own at a website called ABCya.com. The link to the activity is HERE. (Or click on the image above.)
The kindergarten students will use the same website and design their own car, which will move (or be animated) when they are done. That activity is HERE. (Or click on the image above.)
During the first lesson, students used recycled Playdoh cups to "stamp" the circle image on to their paper with tempera paint. Stamping can be a challenging technique for children when they first try because they might try to hit the cup to "make it work" or they might slide the cup like a paintbrush. A skill we take for granted is one many of our students are doing for the very first time.
During the second lesson, students used watercolor paint to fill in the circles. This is an opportunity for the students to learn that it's easier to start with the lightest color when painting with water. If we start with the darkest color it "dirties the water" and we can't paint yellow after that.
**There is something special about the colors we used in this project...ask your child....I bet they can tell you! :o)
{Answer: we used Primary Colors - Primary Colors are very special because we can mix them to make other colors, but we can't mix colors to make red, yellow or blue.}
During the first lesson students painted the blue watercolor backgrounds. During the second lesson students learned about a product by Crayola called "Model Magic". I tell the students, "It's a lot like Playdoh, except a whole lot better!! Students followed along step by step with Mrs. Broaderick. First we created the penguin's body and head, then we added the rest of the details like wings, feet, beaks and snowballs!
On November 2nd, many of the students (and faculty) dressed up as their favorite book character. Click through the photos and you might find a "character" or two that you know!
Your Primary Center Special Area Team picked one of their favorite books, One Hundred and One Dalmatian....can you find Mrs. Broaderick?!
The first grade students have started some owl sketches. For their first try, I think they have done an amazing job! Owl lessons will vary depending on when they come to Art class. Some students will create owls in paper collage. I'll share those results soon.
Please click on the slides to the left and enjoy!
I'd say the easels were a big success! Try to listen to their conversation near the end of the video segment...." Like a real artist...."
While the first grade students finished up their castle paintings, the kindergarten students painted backgrounds for their future owls.

Hot off the presses!
First Grade students are working on their fairy or dragon wings!
Those are some full drying racks today! Woohoo!
During the first lesson the kindergarten students have painted their crowns or tiaras with paint that's called "liquid watercolor". What the students are really doing is learning how to hold and use a paintbrush correctly. :o)
In their next lesson students will get to add bling to their crown or tiara. I know the students will look very royal when they are done!
Just in case you were wondering, "What do they use those cotton swabs for anyway?", I thought I'd explain...
We use them for gluing! Glue sticks just aren't strong enough for what we do in the art room, and refilling and fixing lids on 18 little glue bottles just isn't something this art teacher likes to do! So, we keep a small amount of glue in these lids and use the cotton swabs like a paint brush. Easy clean up too. We leave them out to dry and peel out the remainder the next day!
2 Primary = 1 Secondary!
The students were encouraged to mix their own colors.
We are working on good craftsmanship skills on their first lesson - way to go!
Students were excited when their water changed colors too!
Kindergarten students will use red & blue or yellow & orange watercolor crayons. When they add water, sometimes they will discover that two Primary colors mixed together will make a Secondary color!
First Graders are sketching their own mice drawings. Soon they will explore with Primary color paint and create their own colors. Then they can paint their mice with their new colors!
Wow! OPEN HOUSE was a great turn out on Monday! We truly understand how difficult it can be to attend the evening events we offer here at VCS. We truly appreciate your attendance. Please don't be discouraged if you couldn't make it. Just contact any of your child's teachers if you have questions, we'd be happy to help.
Covered at Open House were some key concepts about:
Our Special Area schedules
Standards Based Report Cards
Participation and Conduct Rubrics
Our new Teacher Connection Pages
Special Area teachers who need volunteers
Helpful carline practices
Accelerated Reader Goals
We are planning an Open House especially for Special Area Night, as soon as that date is set we'll let you know. On that night we will be able to share even more details with you about our individual subject areas.
I'll be sharing this book during our first Art class this year. It is a delightful story about a young girl who is bursting with some very creative ideas!
