Day 18--9/10/14 Resting up before our long trip home
We had planned to go back into Glacier National Park again today, but Mother Nature had other plans. More snow and blizzard conditions and road closures in the mountains so we spent the day in Whitefish. Whitefish is a vibrant western community in the heart of the spectacular northern Rocky Mountains just 50 miles south of the Canadian border, and 25 miles west of Glacier National Park. The Great Northern Railway was built through what is now Whitefish in 1904, which sparked development of the town. Early residents of the town worked for the railroad and nearby logging industries. The main industry today in Whitefish is tourism (both the summer and winter seasons). After breakfast we walked throughout the town visiting the shops and a train museum located at the BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) train depot.
Yesterday, Tom enjoyed a walleye sandwich with sweet potato fries from the Cuisine Machine food truck at the downtown farmer's market. Yum!
Some of the guests staying at the B&B actually took the Amtrak train from New Orleans to Whitefish.
