Day 3--8/26/14 Across the Great Plains
Today we traveled across the Great Plains of Nebraska to the Cowboy State. Cornfields mingled with pastures of grazing beef cattle and wildflowers along the highway added a touch of color to the scenery. Today's trivia: the Nebraska Beef Cattle Industry is the state's single largest industry. Cattle outnumber Nebraskans 4 to 1!
When we reached the panhandle of Nebraska the scenery gradually began to change and we began a steady climb in altitude as we approached Wyoming. Between Cheyenne and Laramie we drove past interesting rocky outcrops called Vedauwoo.
Just before Laramie we stopped at Sherman Summit, which at 8,640 ft. is the highest point along the entire length of I-80. At the summit there is a monument of Lincoln commemorating the old Lincoln Highway which was the first trans-continental highway in the U.S. Today's I-80 closely follows the route of the old Lincoln highway.
