Day 1 - 9/2/2025 Travel to York Maine

We left home bright and early (5:30 a.m.) and headed east on the Thruway. Rather than driving the busy interstates all the way to Maine this year we decided to skip the Mass Pike and take a more scenic and leisurely drive through southern Vermont and New Hampshire. We drove through the Green Mountains with stunning views of rolling hills and forests and came across charming small towns and villages. On VT-9 between Bennington and Brattleboro we made a fun stop at Hogback Mountain Country Store which was chock-full of everything from maple syrup, fudge, apple cider donuts, Vermont cheeses, apparel, gifts, and toys. (Of course I bought some maple syrup candy and maple crème cookies!) The store is located at a scenic overlook on the historic Molly Stark Trail which is at 2,250 ft. elevation with sweeping 100-mile views of the forests and mountains in Vermont, Massachusetts, and NH.

In Brattleboro, VT we stopped to take a look at the historic Creamery Covered Bridge built in 1879. It’s named after the old Brattleboro Creamery that was a short distance from it. The bridge served as an essential transportation route across Whetstone Brook back in the day, allowing farmers to process their milk into butter or cheese at the creamery. The lattice truss bridge is now closed to traffic but we took a walk across.

Driving through New Hampshire was similar to VT with mostly two-lane roads…..many winding sections and occasional passing lanes on steeper grades. The countryside views were very picturesque and the small towns like Keene and Stoddard seemed quaint and secluded. I found an interesting historical marker on our google map route and stopped to check out a stone arch bridge built in the early nineteenth century near Stoddard, NH.

When we were near Concord it became busier and we drove interstate highways the rest of the way to the coast. We arrived at our Airbnb near York and Ogunquit (just 2 miles to York beaches and 4 miles to Ogunquit and Perkins Cove) after stopping at a Kittery Outlet and then enjoying our first fresh seafood dinner.
