APRENDIZAJE SOCIO EMOCIONAL
During the last school year I taught a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Unit in my WHAM classroom. The goal was to talk about the 5 competencies in the beginning of each class and practice/apply what we have learned right away in a game situation.
As an introduction to this unit, we played 4 Corner Rock Paper Scissors. This is a great game to get students moving. However it is also a great way to talk about self awareness and how you feel about winning and losing. I love this activity because it can focus on the individual as well as the group outcome. I also love it because the outcome depends on how fast you run, something kids can influence, but it also depends on the outcome of RPS which is not really skill based but rather luck. This takes the edge off winning and losing.

Crossing the River is an excellent activity to work on Relationship Skills, today's lesson in our SEL Unit. Students have to work together and develop strategies how to make it across the river without falling into the water.
Students were put into groups randomly, not by choice, which sometimes made working together a little more challenging. Communication, problem solving strategies and working with each other as a team were practiced in this activity.

Then a Hotwheels Car, and ended with a goldball and a big marble. All students were engaged and worked on making good decisions as a team to reach their goal (transporting the object from one side of the room to the other without dropping the objects or touching it).
