The success of our programs in preparing a student to meet the job market requirements of a particular industry is dependent upon a close cooperation among TSTC and the businesses/industries that will be seeking our graduates as employees. One method of ensuring this close cooperation is to utilize an advisory committee made up of prospective employers and their employees. These committee members are professionals who can advise the teaching and administrative staff on establishing and maintaining a quality program — one that is current and provides an education that fulfills the needs of skilled employees.
TSTC programs are tailored to meet the workforce development needs of our community and the needs and interests of the individual students. Advisory committees strengthen collaboration between those responsible for instructional programs and the communities they serve. Programs with full advisory support typically teach the most current curriculum and apply the newest technology. The dialogue between advisory committee members and program instructors/administrators provides valuable, real-world input and fosters a shared responsibility for preparing students for a place in today’s workforce and society.
Advisory committee members are representatives from the community who volunteer their time and energy to assure quality instructional programs. The time and effort required of members for advisory committee membership is reasonable in nature.
Advisory committee members must possess knowledge and expertise regarding occupational skills required in the specific workforce career. Additionally, members must:
Have current experience in the occupational field or workforce program
Demonstrate a commitment to the career field
Be willing to devote necessary time to the committee
Demonstrate an interest in TSTC and the communities served
Be able to work collaboratively in a team environment
All committee members have the responsibility to advise, assist, support and advocate for activities designed to strengthen technical education at TSTC. To accomplish this, it is important that all members:
Attend and participate in all meetings or have a delegate from your company attend in your absence
Suggest and develop agenda items prior to meetings
Help to determine committee priorities and ways to achieve them
Respect the rights and opinions of other committee members
Accept and carry out assignments
Promote technical education programs
Engage with the Director of Alignment during the year and during the planning of the agenda for each meeting
Call meeting to order and preside over agenda
Appoint subcommittees, as needed
Represent the advisory committee, when appropriate
Consult with the department chairperson/program director, as needed
Serve with, or in the absence of, the chair
Become knowledgeable about TSTC and the specific workforce program
Attend meetings regularly to participate in committee discussions
Evaluate goals and objectives of the program curricula
Inform college faculty and administrators of new developments in business and industry
Review and recommend program and course content, and determine necessary competencies for employability and continuing education
Discuss and provide input regarding any program concerns
Identify local business/industry leaders who will provide students with external learning experiences, employment and placement opportunities
