We spent our final days at Klondike Elementary! It was bittersweet. Students got to write goodbye messages in the hallways, since our block of rooms was set to be demolished. From now on, you can find us at Klondike Intermediate School!
We participated in the national WordMasters Challenge. This competition requires both a mastery of the meanings of the vocabulary words and thoughtful reasoning about the relationships between these words and more familiar language used in the competition’s analogies. Congratulations to our top 10 scorers!
For Valentine's day last year, we learned all about crystals and then grew our own using a Borax solution in baby food jars and red and pink pipe cleaners!
Proving Newton's second law with marble ramps.
Engineering Tower Cranes at Purdue's STEM Kids Conference.
Math games!! #BlokusTrigon
We won the Kindness Week Door Decorating Contest!
Students used stream tables to learn about the factors that effect erosion. We ventured to Happy Hollow Park to consider local examples of erosion and got to see firsthand how erosion effects the environments at the Indiana Dunes.
We went to the Indiana Dunes Learning Center for 3 days and 2 nights! This trip is hands down our favorite learning opportunity. Students got to experience the unique landscape that is the Indiana Dunes: a meeting point between five different ecosystems! Students applied their knowledge of erosion, ecology, and stewardship.
I love our classroom birthday celebrations! 🎉 Students get to select an activity from the birthday menu. It includes things like do a drawing video, play a favorite game, or design your own Kahoot.
A student grew a watermelon! We graciously helped him eat it. 🍉
Probably. We love experimenting and exploring electricity. Last year, students were determined to demonstrate a very important transfer of energy! 😉
We had several pet friends visit us last year to help us learn about animals and their systems and interactions. 🐭
Last year, we wondered about germs. We wanted to "see" what germs looked like, and designed an experiment to answer the question, Do dominant and nondominant hands collect different amounts and/or types of germs? Above, students are swabbing Miss Taylor, who is left-handed. On the top left is a picture of one of our agar plates, which includes many germ colonies, as well as a fungus! On the bottom left, is a close up of that fungus where we learned about mycelial threads.
Maths and the arts are integrated in this Make-A-Fake project! Students studied the works of Piet Mondrian and applied their understandings about fractions to create their own fake Mondrians. Can you spot them?
How do you like to show your learning? Students write and perform a song about the nature of science!
We love a dress up day! Here we are as elements on the Periodic Table. We learned all about the properties of matter and read the young reader's edition of The Disappearing Spoon.
Our class rescued duckling eggs after the nest was destroyed in our courtyard. We learned how to care for the eggs and the ducklings until they were ready to move to their forever home. Afterwards, we made a podcast to share our experience!
Our class learned how to solve the 2x2 and 3x3 Rubik's cubes! Here you can see the winners of the 2x2 showdown!
One of our favorite activities is exploring under the microscope. On the right side of this image you can see a tardigrade we found in the moss from our courtyard!
To celebrate learning at the end of our space unit, students invented super heroes based on an idea from physics or astronomy.
Greetings! I am excited to begin my thirteenth year at KES! My first four years were spent in a first grade classroom here and this will be my ninth year at the fourth and fifth grade level. Teaching is one of my favorite things, but when I'm not teaching, you can probably find me tucked into a book, playing games, making something artsy, or trekking through the woods with my adventuresome husband and daughter. I also have one snuggly cat! I look forward to another inspiring year with my Nuggets!
