Grading Policy:

My grading policy follows the TSC grading policy. In second grade students receive the following letter grades based off of their work and performance for each subject that the report card is broken up into.

A= 90%-100%

B= 80-89%

C= 70-79%

D= 60-69%

F= 59% and below

Science and Social Studies grades will have participation and whole-group points along with a few assessments. Personal Growth and Study Habits will be graded on a scale from 1-4. The students will be assessed on their completion of homework calendar, cooperation with peers, showing respect, and their effort towards academics.

If a student is absent, he/she will have an equal number of school days to make up the work that they missed while absent. They will receive full credit for work that is completed within the correct time frame.

Homework Policy:

It is my expectation that your child will spend 15 minutes each weekday night on school tasks. A monthly calendar will go home in your child's folder for this 15 minutes to be tracked. Your child can fill out the calendar nightly on his/her own, but I do ask that you or another adult initial the box as well - to ensure that your child is following through with expectations. The 15 minutes may be fulfilled with these options:

R - Reading

IXLL - IXL Language

IXLM - IXL Math

F - Working on math flashcards

V - Studying for Vocabulary

SP - Studying for Spelling

HW - An assignment the student did not complete during the day

While these 15 minutes will not go in the grade book under an academic subject - they do fit into the personal growth and study habits area of your child's report card.

As a second grade team we have decided to not regularly assign graded homework pages. However, if there is an assignment that needs to be completed, it may be taken home and assigned as homework. This homework will go home in your child's folder - so please help them remember to check their folder every night in case they forget an assignment.

Behavior Policy:

In Room 21, we will use Class Dojo to start the year. Class Dojo is an app that is commonly used in elementary schools. Students will earn and lose Dojo points throughout the day based on their choices. You will not receive a daily notification about how your child did in class each day. Instead, I will reach out for either a great thing, or something that needs attention.

Within the classroom we will follow a tiered consequence system. Each time an expectation is not met, the child will move on to the next consequence.

1. Warning and/or loss of 1 Dojo

2. Loss of 1 Dojo

3. Loss of 1 Dojo and loss of privilege

4. Loss of 1 Dojo and parent contact

Of course, depending on the severity of the behavior, parent contact may happen sooner in the tiered list and/or your child may go to Mr. Simmons. This is essentially the same system followed throughout the school (specials, lunch, and recess) so you may be contacted by recess aides or specials teachers.

Our "rules" in our classroom are quite simple. They are:

Be Safe

We will of course discuss all of the tiny common sense rules that fit under our four main rules in the first few days of school.
