Summer Tibetan Language Intensive
Sarah Harding’s students in the advanced track produced translations of the Third Karmapa’s famous aspiration prayer, the Chakchen Monlam, and you can see the featured student translations from the course here.
A group of students in Boulder will continue working with Sarah on the commentary with an aspiration to ultimately provide a polished translation.
Thank you to all the participants and everyone involved! We hope to see you all again for further study next year.
Study Tibetan with Sarah Harding, Jules Levinson, Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen,
and other native Tibetan speakers in an intensive all-day, two-week course this summer!
When: August 13-25, 2018
Where: The University of Colorado, Boulder
This intensive two-week seminar aims to provide immersion in the language and thought processes of Tibetan in order to overcome barriers to understanding. Tibetan language acquisition comes from exposure to and practice with many facets of the language and culture. This course combines methods to develop skills in both written and spoken Tibetan and will help aspiring scholars, translators, and practitioners gain familiarity and eventually fluency in the language.
The course will include textual study and translation, communication and comprehension skills, reading practice, and translator research methods for those in the advanced or intermediate tracks. Tibetan faculty members and students will work together in classes while studying, sharing meals, and practicing. This approach will provide a supportive environment in which to develop students’ fluency in Tibetan. An immersive experience can give tremendous impetus to ongoing studies, and a chance to use and stabilize what students may already know.
We will offer three tracks depending upon how many students sign up.
- Beginning Track: Reading & Grammar and basic colloquial class
- Intermediate Track: Reading & Translating and colloquial class
- Advanced Track: Reading & Translating (choice of daily interpretation class or colloquial as well)
Classes are capped at ten students.
Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
The intermediate course is now full, with a waitlist. There are still spots for the beginning and advanced classes. Register soon to reserve your spot!
