Kinsman Free Public Library (KFPL) is an independent public library located in Kinsman Township serving the people of the Joseph Badger School District and neighboring areas. The mission of KFPL is to serve as the community’s paramount source for connecting people to information, education and recreation.
The Local History Room, located on the lower level of the library, helps to fulfill the Library’s mission by preserving, providing access to, and educating the community through curated objects and archival materials specifically pertaining to Kinsman and its people. KFPL is dedicated to providing programs and services designed to engage, enrich and enlighten.
KFPL has on site, paved parking and front entrance and lower levels accessible with elevator.
KFPL is proud to be a Carnegie Library. Although groundbreaking did not begin until 1913, the history of the library started in 1885. The people of Kinsman recognized the need for an institute of public literacy and formed the Village Improvement and Library Association. The first library opened its doors later that year with a small collection run by members of the association. As the collection grew, the library transferred to multiple town buildings. One man never lost sight of the dream to have a permanent library in Kinsman. Frank Banning, a local philanthropist, began corresponding with Andrew Carnegie in 1911. With Carnegie funding and the vision of architect Charles C. Thayer, Kinsman Library would finally have a permanent home. Ground was broken in 1913 and entrusted to Cortelle Hamilton, the first Head Librarian. Since then it has undergone numerous renovations, making it accessible while striving to retain its Carnegie-era charm in a 21st century world.
