The Howland Historical Society was officially established in 1988. Our goal is to provide education about and to preserve the history of Howland Township. We are in the process of restoring and preserving two historic houses as museums for public viewing of our artifacts and documents. One of our goals is to educate the youth through programs aimed at attracting their interest in history.
We recently moved, thereby saving, an 1836 house owned by the Ebenezer/Rachel Andrews Brown Family. They were successful dairy farmers in Howland Township. Our goal is to present the house as it would have been lived in by the family, from 1836 through 1900, along with our artifacts of that time period.
Our other house was purchased from the Jones Family who owned the farmhouse for 3 generations of farmers. The original owners were the Samuel Andrews family, having built the home in 1860. This museum will present Howland history beginning in 1900 in addition to the history of the house. Samuel Andrews and Rachal Brown were siblings. This is a wonderful link between the two houses.
At this time neither house is open. When they open there will be good parking, bathrooms, and ADA access to first floor.
