In competitive Fortnite, players are dropped onto a large map where they must quickly find weapons, shields, healing items, and other equipment. As the match continues, a storm begins to close around the map. This makes the playable area smaller and forces players to move toward each other.

Fortnite requires much more than just being good at shooting. Competitive players need good communication, teamwork, quick decision-making, map awareness, and the ability to adapt to different situations. Players must decide when to fight another team, when to avoid a fight, and how to safely move across the map as the storm closes in.

In team-based high school esports competitions, players work together to survive as long as possible while eliminating opposing players. Teams can earn points based on their placement in each match as well as the number of eliminations they earn. Because several matches may be played during a competition, consistency is important. A team that communicates well, makes smart decisions, and performs consistently can put itself in a strong position throughout the competition.
