Strong Protection for Your Digital Assets
You can now easily set up and manage your Trezor for secure storage of cryptocurrencies by following the instructions on trezor.io/start and in the Trezor Suite app. Within about 15 minutes, you could successfully have Trezor Suite installed (desktop or web), your Trezor plugged in, firmware loaded, and your wallet created (seed phrase secured by a PIN). There are various security features available in Trezor Suite, such as discreet mode, Tor connection, address-poisoning alerts, and passphrase-all, helping to keep you private while you are in the system.
This guide will help you to set up your Trezor with trezor.io/start, along with a setup timeline; the best practices for your seed, PIN, and firmware; and also how to do troubleshooting.
With the use of a comparison table, you can find how Trezor Suite is related to other popular wallets such as Ledger Live and Coldcard. An interactive decision chart as well as a checklist will guide you through the setup process and keep you safe.
Install and set up Trezor Suite.
Visit the trezor.io/start link, where you need to download the desktop app (or to open the web app). Now install that program and launch it. There is a mobile app of Trezor Suite for Android, and on iOS you can use it in view-only mode, apart from having a Trezor with Bluetooth compatibility.
Connect Trezor and make sure it's authentic.
Attach Trezor to your computer with a USB cable and Suite will prompt “Connect & unlock your Trezor”. Through the Device Security Check (also known as the RSOD screen) the authenticity of the device will be checked. If it looks normal, then set up your Trezor by pressing the Set up my Trezor button. In case you have any issues such as pre-installed firmware or a damaged seal, do contact support.
Download and install the newest firmware.
No firmware comes with a new Trezor device; the Suite will immediately prompt you to download and install the latest version. Then select either Standard or Bitcoin-only firmware; click on Install firmware. Follow the on-screen and on-device instructions until the installation is done (the device will restart). It's vital that you are always using the latest firmware; the Suite will inform you of newly available firmware, and it must be confirmed on the device. Important: your backup seed needs to be available before doing any updates, as this may wipe the device and you'll need the backup to recover it.
Wallet generation and backup of seed phrase.
Once the firmware is installed, Suite will prompt you to either generate a new wallet or recover an existing one. For a new wallet, generate a new wallet and accept the terms on the device; finally click on Create wallet backup. Trezor Suite will instruct you what to do and all that remains to be done is click on Create wallet backup. The new seed words will show one by one on Trezor; it will consist of 12 or 24 words for Model T/Safe5, or 12 words if the device is a Model One/Safe3. Keep these words to a private notepad or a metal plate offline and write them down in the proper order.
Create a new device PIN.
You'll need to create a PIN code to ensure your Trezor is safe. A 33 grid of random numbers will be displayed; your PIN shown on Trezor's screen should match the digits you click on. Your PIN may range from 4 to 50 digits; be careful as the displayed digits will constantly change for extra security. Your PIN shouldn't be an easily guessable one such as birthdays or "1234". The PIN can be changed anytime in Settings. Remember that after 16 wrong entries of the PIN, the device wipes itself; then you'll need to restore it with the seed phrase.
Setup is done.
Your Trezor wallet has now been set up. The Trezor Suite dashboard can now display a summary of your portfolio. Using Activate more networks or the "+ " button, you can add additional coins (e.g. Ethereum, Cardano, Solana). The Receive button can be used to give out your wallet address or to receive coins. You can also purchase or sell crypto via partners using Buy & Sell and Swap features.
The Trezor Suite is the main companion for your Trezor. Once you've finished setup, you'll be taken to your dashboard where you can examine your portfolio's chart and your account balances. Along the left panel, you can add, remove, or select a specific crypto account. For instance, on the Dashboard, your entire balance will be graphed, like in the image below, while your coin balances will be on the left sidebar.
Receiving crypto: Click Send, choose a coin/account, and then your wallet address will show. Make sure that the address which is shown on Suite matches the one that appears on the Trezor screen; otherwise you could lose your crypto due to an address-poisoning attack.
Sending crypto: Click Send and then you'll be prompted to enter the recipient's address and amount as well as the fee amount. Finally, you'll be asked to confirm this transaction by using the Trezor hardware device. Carefully double-check that the address as well as the fee amount on the device agree with the intended figures. Always verify the crypto amount as well as fee displayed on your device as you should be signing on the Trezor, whose operating system is isolated from any malware running on your computer.
Buy, Sell and Swap: There's a Buy & Sell button in the top right corner to access third-party exchange service providers. Through the card, you can buy crypto via wire transfer or by credit card. If you need to sell your crypto for real currency, with the third parties you can cash it out depending on your country's regulations. Since the rate compared for multiple third-party clients will provide you the best offer with the given rates. Alternatively, you can perform crypto trades directly through the app using the Swap button. More detailed information and instructions can be found at Suite or the Trezor tutorials.
You should generally be able to solve the problem without losing any assets, as the crypto exists on its respective blockchain and not the actual hardware. These are some of the most common issues:
No Connection or Unsupported Device: Try using a different USB cable or port, or update to the latest version of the Trezor Suite. On some operating systems, you'll need to grant permission to use the USB device. If you are still unable to access your device, you should attempt the web version of Trezor Suite or another computer. If the Bluetooth device (Trezor Safe 7) is disconnected, please make sure to connect it again.
Firmware is already installed error: If this is what's shown on a newly bought Trezor, you should check the tamper seal. No firmware is ever available on brand new Trezors; thus, performing a Factory Reset of your device (in the Suite Settings) would be the safest thing to do as new, so you can repeat the setup process again. Never use firmware other than the ones supplied through Suite.
Firmware update failed: In case of an abrupt end to the process such as electricity failure, the screen may be seen in red. In order to fix it, all you have to do is enter the bootloader mode and retry to update (you might need to hold down the button as you reconnect the cable). If for some reason this is not applicable, you may use a file available online for manual installation of the bootloader.
Discovery error/money missing: If Suite fails to discover your wallet contents (e.g. "Discovery error") and shows a blank portfolio when many coins should have been shown, this is normally an issue with the Suite connectivity. Verify your connection and turn off your VPN or Tor, unless you use Tor mode from the settings menu. Your cash isn't at risk, as it's recorded on-chain, but you should check if you have the right network or wallet enabled (e.g. ERC-20).
In general, Trezor Suite is for users who appreciate transparency and a cleaner GUI desktop experience
