Design Brief
You are tasked to design and make a mechanical linkage toy for children aged 6 to 11 years old as a form of home entertainment.
Design Specifications

- The design of the mechanical toy must allow at least 1 motion to be generated.
- The design of the mechanical toy must be based on animal theme.
- The mechanical toy must be made of foam board and brass paper fasteners.
Week 1

Objective(s) - To understand and plan a project.
- To understand different types of motion, linkages and mechanical system.
Types of motion, linkages and mechanical system:Act 1: Complete and submit the following- Project planning (Submission in A3 sheet).
- A linkage mock-up made from foam board.

Week 2
Objective(s)- Design and ideate using Random Lines, Circles and Curves & Shape Borrowing.

- Shape borrowing.
- Random Lines, Circles and Curves.
Act 2 : Sketch to design 18 different ideas - Sketch to design 18 sketches using Random Lines, Circles and Curves / Shape Borrowing for your mechanical linkage toy. A simple example is shown here. Submit by end of the lesson.

Objective(s) - To create a mock up of a mechanical toy using linkage.
- To create a production flow chart.
Mechanical mock-up- A mock-up is a quick way to test if you design works, understand potential problems.
- Materials like cardboard, foam board, fasteners are used for making mock-up.
- A production flow chart enables you to plan the task to be done.
Act 3: Production flow chart- Complete and submit a Production flow chart.
- From the 18 design in task 2 , choose 1 design to develop your mock-up.
- The following items are available:
- Brass paper fasteners.
- Foam board.
- Double sided tape.
- You are advised to use circular templates , rulers to mark out your foam board.
Act 4 :After you have decided on your design- Step 1: Mark out the foam board. Decide which are the moving parts.
- Step 2: Cut the foam using penknife or scissors.
- Step 3: smooth the edge using sand paper.
- Step 4: Assemble and test your toy

Objective(s)- To evaluate completed design against design specifications and design brief.
- Review of the design process
Act 5:
- Test your design , checking against the design specifications.
- Sketch your completed design on a piece of A3 paper.
- Evaluate your design.
Questions:
- Did your design works according to the design specifications?
- What are some problems encountered from design to making and testing?
- What are some improvement that you can make on your design?
- Draw your improved design.

Design Brief
To design and make an Electronic Wearable Toy for children such that it can be worn or attach to their bags.
Design Specifications:
- The Electronic Wearable Toy must not be bigger than 100mm x 80 mm x 3mm.
- The Electronic Wearable Toy must be made of acrylic.
- The Electronic Wearable toy must have minimum of one L.E.D controlled by a switch.
- The Electronic Wearable Toy must have a theme of transport or super hero.

Objective(s)
- Understand conductors and insulators.
- Understand how a LED and switch works.
- To understand basic series and parallel circuits.
- To construct a paper mock up of a LED circuit.
Basic circuits
- What are conductors and insulators?
- Can you name some examples of conductors and insulators?
- What are LEDs
- Are there polarity in LED?
- How can you identify the polarity of LEDs?
- What are switches and how it works?
Task 5
- Based on chosen design, transfer one design to a thick piece of paper.
- Cut out the design
- Make a simple LED Circuit with switch.
- Materials Provided
- Copper Tape : Adhesive conductive tape
- Brass Fastener and paper clip - for switch
- CR2032 coin cell battery ( 3V)
- Scotch tape

Tips-Troubleshoot your circuit if it is not working.-Plan the layout properly.-Make sure the contacts are good.-Make sure there are no open or short circuit.

- To transfer paper mock up to acrylic.
- Mark out acrylic.
- Making your chosen design.
Task 6
- What you will need:
- Copper Tape.
- Paper clip.
- Scotch tape.
- LED.
- Acrylic.
- M4 bolts and nuts.
- Complete an online safety Quiz 1 here.
Practical Process
Your circuit consist of 2 parts. The main board which is your chosen design and the switch.

- Mark out : Watch the video here.
- Plan your circuit layout and location of switch.
- Cutting video 1 and video 2. ( This will include the switch and the main board)
- Drilling:
- Check the correct size of drill bit. 5mm for LED and 3.5mm for bolts and nuts.
- Change the drill bit.
- Drilling: Remember to wear goggles and ensure artefact is clamped tightly.
- File sand and polish ( polish if you have time).
Assemble and test.
Assembly and testing consist of wiring your circuit, using copper tape, components with battery and switch.
