As we deliver content online, this page is to help teachers set up and troubleshoot communications with their parents and students.
Some considerations for teachers:
Initially, we need to keep it simple for students and parents--use the recommended apps to start (this will help simplify issues for parents and students)
- Seesaw for K-2
- For grades 3-12, use Google Classroom as the main "Hub,"
- Other apps to consider:
- Screencastify (an extension in your chrome browser, looks like a red and white arrow pointing to the right): use to record messages to the class a little faster than Google Meet, and you can share your screen as well
- How to do an assignment
- Maybe a daily hello and overview
- Group comments after an assignment you might give in reteaching
- Flipgrid (short videos to assess or give exit slips, and it is more phone-based)
- Socrative or Goformative (applying for a district license) for formative assessment--but Google Forms may be the fastest and easiest to start.
- Screencastify (an extension in your chrome browser, looks like a red and white arrow pointing to the right): use to record messages to the class a little faster than Google Meet, and you can share your screen as well
- Use other apps that students are already familiar with from your classroom
Encourage students to use phones or tablets as they have them to make their schoolwork easier (taking a picture of their homework, participating in a Google Meet, etc.)
Importance of streaming and recording in Google Meet
- This is helpful for students not only in their learning, but as they adjust to a different routine away from their teachers and friends
- Schedule group calls ahead of time (preferably at least a day)--this will allow for students to find other means if their internet connection is weak.
- Suggest for students to download the Google Hangouts app to their phones--this may help their attendance in these calls
- Keep them relatively short (under 30 minutes)--they should not be the whole class period
- Put the link to the Google Meet call into Classroom (you can copy the URL at the top of the page when you have opened the call)
- Record group meetings, and put them on Google Classroom (replacing the link to the call) when the video is available, and make sure it is shared so that "Anyone with the link can view"
Areas of focus as we start distance learning
- Communicate with parents to ensure students are getting enough instruction/practice (and they are working on it)
- Paper copies may be necessary for some--share with the office
- Feedback is going to be critical--use comments in Google Classroom assignments or on the work so students
- Rubric grading in Google Classroom--very helpful for standards grading and larger assignments
Additional Resources
- Jamboard could be used for brainstorming, or having students work in small groups
- Slides Q & A could be used for lecture based flow
