Y6 - Week Two
Year Six Weekly Update
Monday 3rd September - Friday 7th September
Review (This week)
English : This week in English we have been exploring newspaper reports. We have been working really hard to ensure we fully understand the language features, layout and structural devices of reports. Using this knowledge, we have researched and analysed the Thai football players who became trapped in a cave. We were able to look at lots of recent articles as it was a very current event. We worked incredibly hard to create our first half of the reports.
Maths : This week in Maths we have consolidated rounding to seven digits, ensured our understanding of place value is concrete through solving a variety of different calculations and problems. We have moved onto exploring complex four-digit addition calculations and using this knowledge to solve word problems.
Science : This week in science we have explored animals' habitats in more detail. We have discovered the primary things an animal needs to thrive, such as: shelter, protection, food, water etc. We designed our own habitats, we we are going to try and create in the school's garden next week. Through our topic work we have looked closely at how polar bears have adapted to be able to survive extreme Arctic winters.
Preview (Next week)
English : We will continue to work on our news reports for the first lesson, and move onto correctly formatting our writing on a computer. This will allow us to manipulate the way our information is presented, such as using columns, adding images, captions etc.
Maths : Next week, we will continue to focus on word problems. We will focus of subtraction calculations, especially on numbers that require multiple exchanges.
Science : Next week we are going to create our own habitats to attract certain types of creatures in the school garden. W will design an insect observatory. This will involve catching a variety of insects and garden animals, studying them and then safely releasing them back into the wild. This will involve the children needing a large plastic bottle (at least 1.5L+)
Homework :
This week the children will receive a written homework sheet, consolidating our work we have done this week on rounding to the nearest 10,000.
Children should continue to read every day, please could you sign their reading record daily
Children have received their TTRS (Times Table Rock Star) logins on a sheet of paper which has been sent home. Please can you allow your children the opportunity to practise their times tables several times a week
Notices:
Please can the children bring in any old plastic bottles they may have at home for a science project next week - the larger the better.
We are trying to create a selection of plants growing on the balcony outside our classroom - any plants you may have at home (and wouldn't mind donating) would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for an amazing week, the children have settled into our Y6 routines brilliantly and been pushing themselves to achieve their best work. Have a safe weekend, enjoy yourselves and refresh yourselves for the week ahead!
Thank you to those who attended our Y6 class presentation - I am more than happy to help with any further questions.
