Week Twelve

Year Five Weekly Update

Monday 19th November - Friday 23rd November

Review (This week)

English : This week in English, Year 5 began our new text King Arthur, which also links with our topic this half term. They found out about how the legend of King Arthur began with Merlin the sorcerer taking Arthur as a baby to keep him safe; his parents King Uther and Queen Igraine dying and how he became the king by pulling the sword out of the stone. Some of the children created character descriptions of King Uther, Lady Igraine and Merlin whilst others wrote a recount of the story so far using descriptive language.

Maths : In Maths, Year 5 worked on solidifying their knowledge of area and perimeter and worked on some challenging word problems. They also practised their arithmetic methods, primarily division, in order to cement the processes. They have also been working really hard on logic puzzles, taking time to ensure they are solving clues in a methodical manner and persevering in challenges, which has been very impressive.

Science :  Year 5 began their second Science topic, States Of Matter. Initially they worked on definitions of different properties of materials, such as transparent, flammable, permeable etc. They then conducted an experiment to test a range of materials and their properties.

Following this, Year 5 completed an experiment based on insulation, focusing on what materials are the best insulators by using a variety of materials and ice.

Preview (Next week)

English :  Year 5 will continue their writing work on King Arthur and the Knights Of The Round table, moving onto Chapter 2: The Round Table. We will write our first diary entry of the Year as Arthur, including descriptive language for his emotions. We will also look in more detail at subordinate and main clauses to make our sentences more interesting.

Maths : Next week within Maths, Year 5 will be focusing on word problems: learning how to break them down using the RUCSAC method and solving each problem one step at a time. As part of this, they will also work on logic puzzles: continuing to practise how to work methodically.

Topic : In topic next week, Year 5 will be looking at why the Middle Ages were also known as "The Dark Ages". They will also begin to look at the structure of castles, how they were important in the Middle Ages and life within the castle walls.
