パプアニューギニアで異文化体験！国際社会学科の現地実習レポート

異文化に飛び込み、国際社会を体感する9日間

2025年11月1日〜9日、国際社会学科2年次選択必修科目「国際社会プロジェクト演習」の一環として、南太平洋の島国パプアニューギニアで現地実習を行いました。本学科は、国内で唯一、学部生を対象にパプアニューギニアでの実習を継続的に実施しており、今年で3回目となります。田所聖志先生が企画・同行し、学生14名が参加しました。

実習の特色

このプログラムは、国際社会や異文化に関心のある学生にとって、語学力やコミュニケーション力を高め、将来の進路選択に役立つ貴重な機会です。現地大学との共同研修や外交機関訪問を通じて、国際協力や文化理解を深めることができます。安全管理についても、大学が事前準備と現地でのサポート体制を整え、安心して学べる環境を提供しました。 

主な活動内容

• モツポレ島での研修：パプアニューギニア大学人文社会科学部（部門長 Linus Digim’Rina先生）と共同で実施。現地大学院生・学部生と交流し、Jason Kariwiga先生、Vincent Kewibu先生による英語講義を受講。 

• パリ村でのインタビュー実習：村のリーダーであるFrancis Kidu氏の協力を得て、モツ・コイタブ言語文化集団の人びとと対話し、文化や生活について調査。調査結果を英語でプレゼンテーション。

• パプアニューギニア大学訪問：パプアニューギニア大学人文社会科学部長Leo Marai先生、自然科学資源センター長Ralph Mana先生を表敬訪問し、標本室を見学しました。さらに、カウンターパートであるLinus Digim’Rina先生のご自宅を訪問し、感謝を伝えました。 

• 関係機関訪問：在パプアニューギニア日本国大使館で外交業務について学び、書記官 小澤薫氏、村上敦氏から国情や外交現場の様子を伺いました。JICA事務所では松岡秀明所長からODAの概要を学び、所員の長瀬良太氏や海外協力隊員の方と意見交換を行いました。 

• 文化・自然視察：ポートモレスビー自然公園や国立博物館美術館でパプアニューギニアの文化や歴史を学習。現地ガイド Roger Maue氏による太平洋戦争展示の解説も受けました。 

※滞在中、モツポレ島を保有するクラン首長Felix Daroa氏の逝去に際し、田所先生と学生がご家族を弔問し、哀悼の意を表しました。

今後の取り組み

参加学生は、現地での学びをまとめ、日本語と英語による報告書やプレゼンテーションを作成します。パプアニューギニアという、なかなか訪れることが難しい国での村落実習や、日本大使館やJICA事務所で働く方々との交流というこのユニークな経験を、今後の学びやキャリア形成に活かしてくれることを期待しています。

Fieldwork in Papua New Guinea: Toyo University Students’ Report

Experiencing Cultural Diversity and Global Society for Nine Days

From November 1 to 9, 2025, as part of an elective Global Society Project Seminar course in their second year, students from the Department of Global Diversity Studies conducted fieldwork in Papua New Guinea, a unique island nation in the South Pacific. This is the only program in Japan that offers undergraduate students continuous fieldwork opportunities in Papua New Guinea. This year marked the third iteration of the program, organized and led by Dr. Kiyoshi Tadokoro, with 14 participating students.

Program Highlights

For students interested in global society and cultural diversity, this program provides a valuable opportunity to enhance their language and communication skills and gain useful insights for their future careers. Through joint workshops with local universities and visits to diplomatic and development agencies, the students deepened their understanding of international cooperation and cultural exchange. The university also ensured students’ safety through meticulous preparations and on-site support.

Main Activities

Workshop on Motupore Island
Conducted jointly with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), the workshop was led by Dr. Linus Digim’Rina. Students interacted with UPNG graduate and undergraduate students and attended lectures in English by Dr. Jason Kariwiga and Dr. Vincent Kewibu.

Interview Fieldwork in Pari Village
With the cooperation of the village leader Mr. Francis Kidu, students engaged meaningfully with members of the Motu-Koitabu cultural group, learning about their traditions and daily life. They then presented their takeaways in English.

Visit to UPNG
Students visited Dr. Leo Marai, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr. Ralph Mana, Director of the Natural Science Resource Centre, and toured the herbarium. They also visited Dr. Digim’Rina’s home to express their gratitude.

Visits to Key Institutions
At the Japanese embassy in Papua New Guinea, students learned about diplomatic work from the First Secretaries Mr. Kaoru Ozawa and Mr. Atsushi Murakami. At the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) office, they received an overview of Official Development Aid (ODA) from Director Mr. Hideaki Matsuoka and exchanged views with staff members, including Mr. Ryota Nagase and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

Cultural and Natural Exploration
Students visited Port Moresby Nature Park and the National Museum and Art Gallery to learn about Papua New Guinea’s culture and history, including a guided explanation of World War II as exhibited by Mr. Roger Maue.

During the stay, students and Professor Tadokoro paid respects to the family of Mr. Felix Daroa, clan chief and owner of Motupore Island, who passed away in late October.

Future Plans

The students compiled their learning into reports and presentations in both Japanese and English. This unique experience—fieldwork in a village and exchanges with professionals at the Embassy and JICA serves as a foundation for future studies and career development.
