From 2 to 10 November 2024, a study tour was conducted in Papua New Guinea as part of the "Project-Based Learning on Global Diversity," a second-year elective course required by the Department of Global Diversity Studies in the Faculty of Sociology. Led by Dr. Kiyoshi Tadokoro, six students participated.
Some activities were conducted in collaboration with the Strand of Anthropology, Sociology and Archaeology of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). Dr. Linus Digim'Rina, head of the Strand, played a significant role in organising this project. The participating students stayed at the UPNG Motupore Island Research Centre. They attended lectures by Mr. David Kombako, Dr. Roxanne Tsang of the UPNG and Dr. Tadokoro. The participating students also undertook a village field trip with UPNG students to Tubuseria village on the other side of the island. Interviews in the village were conducted with the help of Mr. Felix Daroa, the chief of the clan owning the area. After the field trip, the participating and the UPNG students presented the training results. Leaving Motupore Island, the students went on campus tours at UPNG. They paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Dora Kuir-Ayius, Deputy Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UPNG.
The students then presented their activities during their stay on Motupore Island at the Embassy of Japan in Papua New Guinea and the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) Papua New Guinea Office. Mr. Nobuyuki Watanabe, Ambassador of the Embassy, gave welcome remarks and briefly introduced the characteristics of Papua New Guinea. With the facilitation of Mr. Atsushi Murakami, Mr. Kozawa, a member of the Embassy, gave a short lecture on Papua New Guinea. Mr. Kozawa and Mr. Yuki Nishimaki, also a staff member, provided an overview of his work at the Embassy. At the JICA Office, Mr. Hideaki Matsuoka, Director of the JICA Office, introduced the 50 years of history of JICA activities in Papua New Guinea. Students presented their activities and findings during their stay in Papua New Guinea in English in front of national and Japanese staff members. Mr. Kengo Hayashi, Mr. Ryota Nagase, and Mr. Hiroshi Maeda, JICA staff members, and Mr. Shota Uchiyama, a JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteer, participated in group discussions with the participating students.
The students also visited the Port Moresby Sewerage Systems Upgrading Project (POMSSUP) at Joyce Bay, which was constructed with Japanese ODA. They learned about improving the sanitation environment in Port Moresby and the role of sewage treatment plants. Mr. Nerius Kua, the plant manager, and Mr. Anzac Kaplimut assisted with the site visit. The group also visited the Port Moresby Nature Park, the Koki fish market, and the Boroko craft market.
The students are working on their presentations and reports in English to report back to the people and institutions that helped them in the field and deepened their ideas from the study tour.
