Uniform Requirements and Grooming Standards

Lands’ End is the preferred vendor for TMI school uniforms. Any non-athletic items requiring the TMI Logo must be purchased from Lands’ End. They can be purchased using the following link: School Uniforms.


School days are designated as Daily Uniform or Dress Uniform. Dress days will normally be on Mondays.


Requirements for all students:

  • Shirttails will remain tucked in at all times while the student is on campus and in uniform.

  • On school days other than Mondays, when athletic teams will be at TMI, but will be leaving before noon for a game or match, the students may wear approved TMI issued athletic gear.

  • No extreme or excessive jewelry is allowed.

  • No piercings other than the earlobe are allowed. No gauges. Male students can wear small stud earrings only.

  • No visible tattoos are allowed.

  • No extreme or excessive makeup is allowed.

  • Hats are not allowed to be worn during school hours.

  • Dyes, tints, and bleaches must be a natural hair color and not present an extreme appearance (i.e., no spikes, streaks, or primary colors).

  • Lines or designs will not be cut into the hair or scalp.

  • Male hairstyles may touch the collar, ears, and eyebrows, but may not extend longer than the collar, ears, or eyebrows. Male students may not use hair accessories or ties.

  • Beards, mustaches, and facial hair are not permitted. Sideburns may extend only as far as the bottom of the ear.

  • All articles of clothing must be tailored to fit neatly and must meet specifications and style precisely.

  • Uniform requirements and grooming standards for JROTC Cadets are published separately and may be obtained from the Corps of Cadets. On days when JROTC Cadets are not in Cadet attire, their daily uniform must adhere to the schoolwide dress code.


The Head of School for Academics and Programs and Director of Student Life will be the ultimate judges in all matters regarding dress code, uniforms, and grooming.

Required non-Corps Uniforms – Female Students

Daily Uniform Requirements

  • Khaki, black, or grey skirt (skirt length must reach to the fingertips of the extended arm) or, khaki or black shorts or pants. Skirts must be worn at the waist and not below. Middle School students are required to wear shorts under a skirt.

  • Middle School: Grey long- or short-sleeved mesh polo-style shirt with the TMI monogram, or long or short-sleeved white Oxford dress shirt.

  • Upper School: White or black long or short-sleeved mesh polo style shirt with the TMI Logo.

  • A plain white T-shirt (or grey for Middle School) with no printing of any kind may be worn under the authorized uniform. Upper School students may wear a white or black turtleneck under the daily uniform for warmth. Middle School students may wear a white or grey turtleneck under the daily uniform.

  • All outerwear must be purchased from Lands’ End or the school Spirit Store, with the exception of the letterman jackets, which are sold by Balfour (See Inclement Weather policy for exceptions.) Acceptable outerwear items include:

  • TMI sweatshirts, windbreakers, and letter jackets with the monogram

  • Black monogrammed sweater

  • Monogrammed long-sleeved or pullover vest

  • Polartec monogrammed jackets and vests

  • Only TMI hoodies may be worn, hood down, on all days except Monday. No other brands are allowed. For example, collegiate hoodies or other brands cannot be worn.

  • Belts must be worn with shorts and slacks.

  • Solid white knee-high socks, black or white tights (or grey for Middle School), or leggings are permitted with the dress shoes. Ankle-length socks may be worn with tennis shoes. Leg warmers are not allowed.

  • Shoes must be Saddle Oxfords or mostly white, mostly grey, or mostly black tennis shoes. Shoes must be in good condition, without writing or designs drawn onto them.

Dress Uniform Requirements

  • Khaki box-pleated skirt (skirt length must reach to the fingertips of the extended arm) or pants.

  • White, long- or short-sleeved, Oxford-cloth shirt

  • Black school-logo tie. Seniors have the privilege of choosing their own tie.

  • On dress days, Middle School students may wear any approved TMI outerwear that does not have a hood.

    • Upper school students wear Lands’ End black blazers on dress days from the third Monday in October through the Monday before Easter.

  • Sweaters or outerwear may not replace the blazer on dress days. The blazer shall be worn throughout the day while the student is on campus. (It may be removed for classroom comfort but put back on prior to leaving the classroom.)

  • Blazers must be worn in Chapel.

  • For Upper School students, acceptable outerwear on dress days include Lands’ End blazers and sweaters. All other outerwear is prohibited, unless an inclement weather day is announced.

  • Only black or white tights or leggings or solid white knee socks are permitted.

  • Saddle Oxford shoes or black or brown shoes without heels must be worn.


Required non-Corps Uniforms – Male Students

All articles of clothing must be tailored to fit neatly and must meet specifications and style precisely. Students wearing clothing that is either baggy or slim fitted will be in violation of the Uniform Requirements and Grooming Standards.


The Head of School for Academics and Programs and Director of Student Life will be the final authority on matters pertaining to appropriate dress. Refer to “Uniform Requirements and Grooming Standards” for ordering information.


Daily Uniform

  • Khaki or black shorts or pants only. Shorts must be fingertip length.

  • Middle School: Grey long- or short-sleeved mesh polo-style shirt with the TMI Logo, or long or short-sleeved Oxford dress shirt.

  • Upper School: White or black long- or short-sleeved mesh polo-style shirt with the TMI Logo, or long or short-sleeved Oxford dress shirt.

  • A plain white T-shirt (or grey for Middle School) with no printing of any kind may be worn under the authorized uniform. Upper School students may wear a white or black turtleneck under the daily uniform for warmth. Middle School students may wear a white or grey turtleneck under the daily uniform for warmth.

  • Black Lands’ End tie with TMI logo. Seniors have the privilege of choosing their own tie.

  • On dress days, Middle School students may wear any approved TMI outerwear that does not have a hood.

Guidelines for Free Dress

Informal (“Dress-Down”) Days:

On Spirit days and free-dress days, students must follow the prescribed dress guidelines as designated by the Director of Student Life.

  • Blue, white, black or grey jeans, without holes and in good repair, or uniform shorts/pants/skirts are allowed.

  • Shorts are allowed as long as the length reaches to the fingertips of the extended arm.

  • Leggings, Sweatpants, or Athletic Wear is prohibited unless specifically stated otherwise.

  • Students must always wear closed-toed shoes.

  • All clothing should be tasteful and tailored to fit appropriately. Baggy or slim-fitted clothes are not allowed to be worn to school on dress-down days.

  • Students may not wear clothing with inappropriate symbols, slogans, lettering, images, or references.


Formal (“Dress-Up”) Days:

These guidelines are intended for special events such as school ceremonies (when not required to be in uniform), Senior chapel talks, field trips, and class presentations.

  • Dress and skirt length must reach to the fingertips of the extended arm. Tops should not be low-cut. No strapless dresses or blouses are allowed. The torso (front or back) of a garment should not be open or cropped.

  • Formal dress for male students includes a button-down shirt, a tie, and a jacket or sports coat paired with trousers. Leather dress shoes and business-appropriate socks are expected.

  • Excessively tight or revealing attire is not allowed.


If a student is caught violating these guidelines, they may lose free-dress privileges for the future. Students may be required to call their parents for a change of clothes or wear clothing provided by the school that will cover the inappropriate attire.


Inclement Weather Policy

If any of the following conditions for potential inclement weather are met, students may wear non-TMI jackets, coats, or rain gear. Students may also wear rain boots for rainy weather or warm boots for cold weather.

  • projected to be below 50 degrees at any time during the school day

  • winds of 20 mph or stronger

  • rain chance of 50% or greater


All other uniform requirements must be met. Families will not be informed of these conditions. It is the responsibility of the students to check the weather forecast at www.weather.com, using the 78257 zip code.
