5 school days to go! WOW!
We had such a blast at the carnival. They played and ran and laughed. It was glorious. I am so thankful we were able to have that celebration together. We are going to have a class party on Tuesday, June 1st. We will have our class award ceremony, red carpet and all. We are also "going" to the movies with tickets, a red carpet, popcorn, drinks, and treats. We will take a walk down the "TLCS Walk of Fame," and find our name in the stars. Also on that day we are having a celebration for all of our students with Summer birthdays. If you are a parent of a student with a summer birthday, and you would like to bring something to share, feel free! Just know they will have snacks earlier in the day as well. Here is the link for the sign-up for treats and decorations.

Don't forget that next Friday is a half-day and there is no school on Monday, May 31st. There is no spelling this week. We will have our regular math homework this week. Please encourage your child to keep reading so they can reach their final AR goals! The math test is on Wednesday. The study guide went home on Friday.
No spelling test.
No memory verse test.
No selection test.
We are memorizing the books of the Bible. Here is the song we have been using. They are getting so good at it. This will be their final grade for Bible class. https://youtu.be/g4KEWLNnmCQ We are practicing every day in class and making it super fun.
Go on a tour of our state capitol building! Since we can't go to Sacramento together this year, here is the virtual tour.

Welcome to week 35 of 37! This week we have our all-school carnival on Wednesday. Hot dogs will be served! Each grade will have 40 minutes of carnival fun where they will have free reign. It is going to be so much fun.
This is a full week. Remember that Friday, May 28th is a half-day, and 4th grade will be dismissed at 11:50. There is no school on May 31st in honor of Memorial Day. The last day of school is on Wednesday, June 2nd where these 4th graders will become newly minted FIFTH GRADERS!
This week will complete our final math study guide. Next Wednesday, May 26th we will have our final math unit test of the year. I can't believe how many lasts we are coming to.

Good morning! It's May and the weather has been STUNNING!
Last week we finished our literary essays! This week is one of my favorite weeks in writing because after reading so many graphic novels, it is now time for us to write our own! There was a bit of struggle with the Unit 6 Math test, but after reviewing with the students, I am hoping the concepts stuck a bit better. We have all done so much growing together this year. I can't believe how far they have come. We are on the last lesson in unit 4 for social studies, so we will start the study guide next week. We have finished the science curriculum, so we will be doing mini-lessons each week from here on out. In Bible class, we have had some riveting conversations lately. The students are like mini-theologians. They are full of curiosity and wonder, and it is an honor to have these conversations with them. We are constantly in awe at what deep thinkers they are and how they challenge us with their questions.
Have a great week!

They did it! They survived and thrived during IOWA week! We had such an incredible week doing STEAM experiments. We dissolved eggs in different solvents, tested our engineering skills, and designed cable cars and parachutes. What a special way to learn and spend time together. Thank you so much for all of the snacks you sent in to nourish and make it special for our class.
Getting to play with the other 4th graders at our recesses and lunch has literally changed the culture of our classroom. They needed new playmates. They needed more freedom. It really is amazing to see. They are so happy! We are all so thankful for this major change. They are less frustrated. I was feeling like we were imploding, and now I just feel like we are thriving! Thank you, Jesus. I feel like we are have made it across a major finish line. Hope is on the rise!
We have our Unit 6 math test this Thursday. We completed the study guide together last week, so we are ready to rock this test!
There are just 26 days left in this school year. Let's finish strong!

What a great first week of our last quarter together! We were busy, busy, busy. We dove right in to get going on our new writing unit. We wrapped up our geology unit, and we have our test this Thursday. The study guide went home last Thursday.
Next week is IOWA testing. I sent out a sign-up for snacks throughout the week. We want to make it special and fun for the students. They are going to need lots of rest. It is a BIG week. Each afternoon we will be doing spring-themed STEAM activities. There is no math homework this week, as it is a review week to reinforce everything we have learned this year before testing.
This week we only have spelling homework and our memory verse. There will be NO homework during testing. We will get our daily reading done during school hours.
I hope you have a great week!

Happy Spring and welcome back! I hope you had an absolutely wonderful and restful spring break! I went back to Virginia to see my family, spend time with friends, and relax. Since I am fully vaccinated, I no longer have to quarantine. It is so exciting!
Welcome to the fourth and final quarter of the FOURTH grade! Your child is almost a FIFTH grader! Wow! We have only 8 1/2 weeks to go. We had the incredible Mr. Lockwood back on ZOOM to help us with our geology unit. Our 4th grade parents are awesome!
IOWA testing is in two weeks. I will send out a signup next week to bring in healthy snacks for each day of the week. We really try and make it special for the students. Each day after testing, we have a STEAM activity that the students will LOVE!
This quarter we will learn how to write literary essays. We will ask ourselves, "What is the author's purpose? What is the author trying to say?"
Next week we will have a science test on Thursday, April 15th. The study guide will come home this Thursday.
It's good to be back!

It's the last week of the 3rd quarter! We did it! The students have accomplished so many things this year. They have experienced the milestones of the 4th grade: Draftstic Park, Gold Rush Day, and the California Landmark Projects! Encourage your child to read, read, read! AR goals need to be met by this Wednesday at 8am. I say Wednesday instead of Friday, because on Friday, I am throwing a party for every student that has met their AR goal for the quarter!
We have been having such a great time in science, learning all about volcanoes, the rock cycle, and erosion. We are having our in-house hydrogeologist join us this week via Zoom, to share with us about actually working with rocks! We are really looking forward to it!
The students have been writing poetry all year, and this is our final week of poetry. We will have a poetry slam on Thursday. Think dark cafe, with people wearing black turtlenecks. Everyone should wear black on Thursday to set the scene for sharing our poems. A beret or fedora would add some flair.
It's almost time for Easter. This week in Bible class we will be studying the true meaning of Easter: the death and the resurrection of our Lord. You will notice that I changed the memory verse a little bit from what is on the spelling sheet to make it clearer for the students to memorize:
"I pass on to you: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

The California Landmark Projects are so amazing! We are having so much fun listening to the different presentations!
We are so excited for you to see the 4th-grade auction basket. It is totally awesome! I think people are going to go wild for it. Thank you so much for donating. It made it so easy for us to purchase and put together. The whole 4th-grade team thanks you! The auction is going to be so fun. I can't wait to see all that is being offered. I will definitely be bidding on the 4th-grade basket!
This Friday is a half-day. Usually, we are staying after school to set up for the auction, but this year will be a bit different. We have ALL learned how to adapt and do things differently this year. I am so proud of all of us: our students, our staff, and our families, as we passed the accreditation with flying colors. What a blessing! Thank you all so very much.
The end of the quarter is the last day before spring break: March 26th! It is coming up quickly. We are going to start doing in-class character trait awards. When it is your child's day to receive an award, we will email you the video of him or her receiving it.

March 1, 2021 - Week 25
What a week we have ahead of us! It's ACCREDITATION week! We have been working toward this for two years, so it is very exciting that it is finally time. Happy MARCH! We are in the final month of the third quarter. I can hardly believe it.
This week is a big one:
The California Landmark reports are due today. We will be working on our presentations today. If your child forgot to bring their report home, and they are not yet finished, then I will help them finish today.
The Landmark models are due this Friday.
The Unit 5 math test is tomorrow.
The last day of the quarter is March 26th. Our spring break is from March 27th-April 4th.
Throughout February, we have been reading days from a book called 28 Days: Moments in Black History that Changed the World in honor of Black History Month. Unfortunately, due to schedule constraints, we were not able to listen to all 28 days. If you would like to listen to this book with your child, the book is linked above.
Let's have a great week together!

What a fabulous time we had on Gold Rush Day! We extended to Friday, as we built our wagons. What a great ending to my favorite unit of social studies. Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies and made the day extra special!
The students have been working so hard. This week we will study for our next Science and Math test, and I am so excited to start FRACTIONS! The Science test will be this coming Friday, February 26th. The Math test will be next Tuesday, March 2nd.
This week we will try and finish our final drafts for our landmark projects in class. We are hoping to have the final drafts of the papers done by Monday, March 1st. The models are due on Friday, March 5th, so do not delay.

February 9, 2021
I hope you had a nice three-day weekend. Remember that next weekend is also a three-day weekend in honor of Presidents' Day. Some pictures of the kids on the Fun Run are included here. It was truly so much FUN! The kids were hilarious with the colored powder all over them and they all ran so hard. It is so amazing how our community bonds together to bless our school. We are so thankful that we were able to exceed our fundraising goal. Thank you! Thank you!
Don't forget to get your FREE National Park Pass! All 4th graders get in free to National Parks. I even think they are extending it because of Covid restrictions. Check out their site to print out your pass or just show the park digitally. https://everykidoutdoors.gov/pass.htm Go explore!
Next week is our famous Gold Rush Day! On Thursday, February 18th please have your child wear their best 49er gear. NO, not the football team. Have them wear a flannel shirt and jeans, like Levi Strauss who invented jeans. Add a hat and suspenders for extra flair. We have the mustaches for them at school that they can wear on the outside of their masks. It is one of the highlights of the year! Don't forget that our Valentine's Day party is this Friday. Pictures for their projects are due by TOMORROW! Make sure you send them in so each child will have pictures to decorate their project with. Your child can bring in a valentine for each of their classmates on Friday as well. There are 17 of us.
I apologize for the mix-up with the link for Sign-up Genius. I hope it makes more sense now. Hello everyone! Happy Tuesday! (To learn what the picture is all about, keep reading ;) )
There are so many amazing things going on in the classroom that I am excited to share with you. First is one you all have seen some of already. Last week we started our California Landmark projects. Your child should have come home and told you the landmark that they have chosen. We will be writing the reports in class. They are due on March 1st. The model, that will be created at home, is due on Friday, March 5th. The model should be small enough for your child to carry and fit on a student desk (16x24 in). It should be designed and created by the students with limited support from parents as necessary. The model should have a clear label and the student's name should be displayed. Please help your child find information to bring to the class about their chosen landmark: books, articles, magazines, etc. Thank you so much for your support and help! I have already learned so much about these landmarks from your students and cannot wait to see more!
Last call for photos for Valentine's Day! Please send 8-10 photos of your child and/or family to me so I can print them in time for the craft on February 12th.
It is almost class project time. I have a great idea for us and will share it with you soon. It's going to be so RAD!
This Friday is the Fun Run! Your child should have shown you the website to sign them up for the Fun Run (funrun.com). There have been emails from Danae Miller about the events this Friday if you would like more details. Basically, the students are going to have a Color Run. A lot of powdered paint will be thrown on them as they run. This means on Friday they will get MESSY! Please make sure they have grubby clothes so no one will be upset if they come home tie-dyed. The class has been so excited about Fun Run and has done such a great job fundraising. Keep up the good work!
Here is a Sign-Up Genius for the fun events that lie ahead. This is basically a virtual sign up sheet for all that we will need for Valentine's Day, Gold Rush Day (which I will explain more about next week), and the classroom store.
Speaking of the classroom store, I wanted to inform you all that we have a new behavior monitoring system. I call it the Classroom Economy. Each student earns or loses tickets based on their behavior throughout the school day. On the last Friday of each month, they can spend their tickets on different prizes from my store. The students seem super excited about it, and it seems to be working well so far. I would love your support to further encourage positive behavior in the classroom.

It's the last week of January and we are on the second week of the third quarter. We have an actual full week of school this week! On Wednesday, the students will take their unit 2 science test. Every student has the complete study guide home with them today. We will study in class, they brought it home to study, and they are going to do GREAT! We have kicked off Unit 5 in math and are already learning about the gold rush in California. Please send in your 8-10 photos for our Valentine's Day craft to me whenever you can. The deadline for sending in photos will be Feb 10, so you have plenty of time.
It's almost Fun Run time!
Fun Run (Elementary K-5 only): TLCS Fun Color Run
Where: On campus (still working out the timing and location details)
When: February 5th
What: Our typical Fun Run (run laps, earn awards and popsicles) with color shooting added!
Other info: Lots of details will come through emails. But for now, please ask that parents register their kids on funrun.com. The first class to be full registered wins a class party! Registering doesn't cost a thing!
P.S. Pledges are already coming in and Ms. Rau's class is WAY in the lead. Just creating some healthy competition for the final class parties. ;)
I hope to see you at the Drive-in movie night! My family will be there. It's going to be so fun. The movie looks silly and fun. Hope you can make it!
Movie Night (everyone K-8): TLCS Movie Night at the Boardwalk
Where: The Boardwalk River Parking Lot
When: February, 19th @ 6:30pm (can arrive at 5:30 to snag a spot and purchase food)

I hope you had a nice three day weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today, we will be working on our own dreams for our country. You can check out this great video of MLK Jr. with your child. https://www.getepic.com/MLKJr.
Welcome to the third quarter! We are halfway through the school year. We got an added blessing last week, as Blake Florchinger joined our classroom. We are so happy to welcome him to our class!
I hope to be handing out report cards by the end of the week.
This quarter we will be writing informational reports in class about California landmarks. The only part that will be done at home, will be the model of their landmark. I will send home a packet soon with all of the details.
I can't believe it, but Valentine's Day is already right around the corner. I have an idea for a project, but I will need your help. All you will need to do is email me 8-10 pictures of your family. I will print them out in black and white, then we will modge podge them together onto a piece of cardboard. You can find a picture of a sample below I think these will turn out to be adorable keepsakes. I am excited to do them.
This Friday is a teacher in-service day, so we will have a half-day. School will be out at 11:50am.

Happy New Year! What a gift to have time with family. I hope you had a lovely Christmas break. Welcome to the year 2021! I am filled with hope for all this year holds. We have a couple of big weeks of review as the quarter is coming to an end. We will make study guides and work hard reviewing everything we have learned in science, social studies, and math. There will be ample time to study and prepare. The last day of the quarter is January 15th. AR goals need to be met by Friday, January 15th. We are almost halfway through the school year. It's hard to wrap my mind around it. I am just so thankful for all we have already learned together and all of the experiences we have shared.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I love this season of thankfulness. We are having such a blast in science class as we store up energy. Last week we made bumper coasters and this week the fun continues as we add twists and turns. We are deep into the explorers and settlers of CA, as we learn about the influence that Spain and Mexico have had on our state. Everyone has begun working on their opinion writing piece. "Write it strong and write it long!" In Bible class we are learning about having a spirit of thankfulness. I will send out a sign-up sheet today for snacks for our thanksgiving party. It is going to be a very special week. Remember that next week we have the entire week off.

Happy Monday to you all! Remember that this Wednesday we do not have school in honor of our brave veterans.
We kicked off our science unit building cars. I hope your child showed you how we stored energy by putting in the "work." Each time we twisted the rubber band it would store energy just waiting to be released. Some students had great success, while others spun out of control. Oh what fun! This week we will store energy by releasing an object from different heights.
We are having a great time learning all about opinion essays. Last week we debated whether or not cell phones should be allowed in schools. The students then wrote a persuasive essay on what book their classmates should next read. This week we pick our passion projects and start our thesis statements. I can't wait to see what the students choose to defend. So special! Remember that our math test is tomorrow.
Please have your child return their math study guide tomorrow for credit. Thank you! Have a fabulous week.

Thank you for a wonderful week of conferences. It was so nice to get to know your children more through your eyes. It is always lovely to connect. We had the most wonderful harvest party on Friday. Thank you so much to all the parents who provided snacks and goodies for our wonderful movie day!
Each week we will have a spelling pre-test. If a student misses less than 3, they will add the enrichment words to their studying for the week. These words are meant for a challenge and can only be added as extra credit. If anyone scores a 100% on the pre-test, then they will only study the enrichment words for the week. The enrichment words will follow the same rule that we are studying that week. This week is an assessment week, so all of the words are from social studies and science. They are very difficult, so no one reached the enrichment words this week, but I am sure many will next week. I will start to add them to the weekly spelling sheet.
Today we will be registering to vote and learning what is required to become the President of the United States. Each student will come up with their own campaign slogan. Tomorrow is ELECTION DAY and we will cast our votes.
This week we are beginning our science unit on energy. Look for their cars to come home and ask your child how they stored up energy to power their car. We will be starting on a math study guide on Wednesday. The math test will be on Tuesday, November 10th. Remember that next week is Veteran's Day and we will not have school on Wednesday, November 11th.

Welcome to the 2nd quarter parent/teacher conference week! I love starting a new quarter. Everything is new, and we start over.
In social studies we are studying the Native Americans, explorers, and the missions of California.
In science we are beginning our energy unit which is the absolute best! We start our opinion writing essays and will choose a topic that we are passionate about defending.
In math we continue to work on long division. It is a very exciting time and I am looking forward to learning together.
Tuesday-Friday will be half days. 4th grade dismissal is at 11:50. Please be on time, because I often have conferences at 12:30, and this will allow me to eat lunch.
This Friday, for our harvest party, we will have pajama day. I look forward to meeting with each of you this week.

This is the last week of the first quarter of school! How is that even possible? These students have navigated so many changes in just this first quarter and they have come out on top! Please encourage your child to be taking their final AR quizzes this week. Go to www.tlcs.us and click on the blue AR circle to access the site. The login is the first letter of their first name and the first four of their last name. Everyone's password is abc.
Example:
login: agran
password: abc
Our AR goals need to be met by Friday morning as the school day begins. I am really looking forward to meeting with each of you next week.
Don't forget that we have a science test on Wednesday. We sent home the study guide on Friday, and your child should be studying at home. They are going to do great. Here is a link to a Jeopardy game that I made for them to use for practice: https://www.playfactile.com/besksciencehumanmachine They love to practice with Jeopardy. So fun!

Genesis 1:27 "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." This week in Bible we are talking about how we are created in God's image.

Hello Families!
It’s already the middle of October, and that means our first quarter is almost over. We are finishing up our units and making sure all of our work is turned in. This is a big week for our fourth graders. We have a math test on Tuesday and a social studies’ test on Wednesday. We have been practicing and studying in class, but they need the reinforcement at home as well. Please remind your child to bring their study guide back to class on test day so that they can get credit for their hard work.
I look forward to meeting with you during parent-teacher conferences, the last week of October. Just a reminder, October 27th-30th are half days so that we can meet. I will be sending out a sign-up sheet this week.
As we begin our FOURTH week of in-person learning, I feel like we have all adjusted to the new routine. If your child is ever absent, just let the office and me know, so that I can turn make sure you are directed to the correct Zoom class. If your child is absent, they will Zoom into the class of the original teacher they were enrolled with at the beginning of the year. I know this might be kind of confusing. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, or we can have a quick chat at drop-off/pick-up.

Friday is a half-day, for the teachers to have an in-service. I hope you have a wonderful week!
