The truth about IOT

While this site does focus on a great deal of IOT (Internet of Things) devices including smart speakers, casting devices, and other devices that can be controlled from your mobile device, this website also encourages caution while using these devices.

Many of these devices are connected to a wireless network. There have been cases with companies such as Vizio and Ring that have had compromises reported over the last few years.

Some of these are the fault of the manufacturer while other cases are the fault of the installer. Whatever the situation may be, you should take these tips into consideration:

1) Stay away from smart TVs. Use a streaming device instead.

If the manufacturer of you TV created a software error (especially if it's security related) hopefully they will release an update that you can install. As a the owner, it is your responsibility to update them and not ignore them.

With streaming devices updates do happen on an automatic basis. Once nice feature about streaming devices is that most devices from Amazon and Roku can be installed using an ethernet cable creating a more secured by eliminating wireless security concerns.

2) If there is an ethernet option, take it

If you can plug it into an ethernet cable, that is the safe way to go. Even if you don't have an ethernet connection for the device, the manufacturer may have an option to purchase one.

While Chromebooks don't have an ethernet port, one can be purchased using a USB port (known as a dongle).

If you are concerned about security in your home or business, it is best to keep wireless devices to minimum.
