Purpose
Teachers Orientation Programme Team (TOP) at TIFRH aims at conducting teachers training programmes in Science for teachers at the undergraduate level. Teacher training courses help teachers acquire and update their knowledge and skills in their respective subjects and pedagogies. They also help teachers develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills that are essential for effective teaching.
Some of the expected outcomes and benefits are:
Improvement in the team management, communication skills, and critical thinking of participants
Improvement in teaching- learning and student engagement
Creation of a pool of trained institutional leaders
Improvement in administration of higher education institutions
The first TOP in physics called the TOP-UP programme was conducted in February 2024 for undergrad teachers of a class of 25. This first batch was involved in experimental planning, building low cost/no cost teaching aids, critically thinking through problems with help from resource persons from HBCSE, Mumbai who kept the sessions interactive and thought-provoking. The teachers claimed that they were reminded of their student days and enjoyed being able to plan experiments, work on physics problems, while clearing out several misconceptions, with careful exploration and reasoning. They look forward to more!
