Dear Fleming Family,
I’m taking a break from teaching after thinking about it for over 4 years. 😔
I’ve taught 19 years and this year has been one of the best. I love my school, my teammates, my students, the staff and administration. The decision is both practical and involves something I would love to explain once school is out. I will be finishing out this year, just not coming back next year.
Teaching is demanding. It’s said that teachers make 1,500 decisions a day, second only to air traffic controllers. I’ve felt the effects of that decision fatigue daily, having to decide what students learn, how to learn it and how to handle whatever situation comes my way each class period. I love teaching, but it can be stressful.
Beyond the daily weariness, there’s another big reason I’m leaving teaching, but I’m only sharing that on my secret youtube channel on the last week of school. 😉
I am training to become a Home Inspector for anyone buying or selling their home. I’m looking forward to helping people and using the hard-earned lessons I’ve learned in my many struggles and years of remodeling.
I’m taking a leave of absence in case I decide to return after trying my hand at a career with less social stress. It’s more likely I’ll move in this new direction with abandon. A leave of absence means you might come back. It’s not the same as quitting.
Thank you for the smiles, kindness and appreciation that make this decision harder. I feel so valued and seen at Fleming. Though this change is hard, I recognize my need for a new path and I’m excited to explore this new season.
You know I hate rumors and I would love to explain to any of you (parents/students/staff) in person exactly what’s going on & why I’ve made this decision. You are an incredible group & it’s nothing you did wrong or anything I’ve done wrong. This was my choice based on how I believe I can best help people in this world. I get to help families like yours be safe by finding potentially dangerous things in a house before they buy it.
I’ve already passed the test for being a Home Inspector and I’ll be working with Southern Oregon Home Inspections 😁 on the weekends until summer and then full time.
Sincerely, Mr. Roby
P.S. I plan to sub on days when I can next year, so you’ll see me around, just not as much. 😉
