WINTER 2024 VERSION --- MUST COMPLETE BEFORE JAN 5
Please watch the following introduction video:
YOU Need to be Someone's Hero
As we outlined above, Swim Instructors can be a child's hero, but only when the Swim Instructor understands, and tries to make a difference. Each class, shift, student is another opportunity to make a difference in a child's life -- The best Instructors understand the immense responsibility that being an Instructor at Oakville Swim Academy entails.
Portraying a Positive Image
When at work, you MUST illustrate a professional image. As we just mentioned, you are someone's hero; Imagine, as a child, you heard your hero swear? Or talking about something of inappropriate topic (e.g., gossip, partying.). So, when at work, pretend there is a spotlight on you!
Always Strive For Better & Higher
This is one of the more ambiguous elements, but it is important nonetheless. We want you to always strive for better & higher, and that could mean:
Pushing a student to the best of their abilities;
Giving detailed and action-oriented feedback to students;
Helping a co-worker if they are unsure about something;
Asking for feedback from Deck Supervisors; and
Enrolling in workshops & trainings.
We encourage our staff to always, always, try and improve themselves as Instructors, employees, and as humans.
Instructing Is Not The Only Element of this Job
Of course, your main task is being an AWESOME Instructor, but there are other elements, too. We understand for many of you, this is your first job, and we cannot be more honoured, but Oakville Swim Academy requires you to be a great employee, too. That could mean:
Responding to slack messages in a timely manner;
Following the organization's policies and procedures;
Respecting your coworkers, superiors, and the building; or
Awareness of when to ask for help.
These are just a few examples of how you can be a good employee.
It is important to engage in self-reflection and explore why you became a Swim Instructor and what this job means to you.
Take a moment and respond to one of the following questions:
Why did you initially want to become a Swim Instructor?
Describe a positive experience you had when you were in a swimming lesson?
