February 2021 Creative Arts Challenge
Comics & Cartoons!
Comics & Cartoons Art Challenge
If you like comics, cartoons, manga or anime this activity is for you! A great activity for half-term...
DRAW, sketch or paint your favourite comic, cartoon, manga or anime character…
OR why not invent your own… how about turning someone you know into a comic strip character or superhero? It could be a family member, famous person, pet, animal... or even yourself!
So get drawing this half-term... and don’t forget to send us a photo of your artwork for the online gallery!
Here are some tips on creating original characters...
· Think about your character’s personality - are they adventurous, brave, mischievous or cute?
· Think about their physical features - what will make them unique?
· Play around with a character on the page, making some simple sketches before attempting your final masterpiece!
· Try exaggerating their most striking features, eg larger-than-life eyes, hair, hands or feet!
· Bring them to life with bright colours, crazy costumes, hairstyles & accessories!
Send your comic and cartoon art to: wpolley@theroseland.co.uk
If you enjoyed this challenge, you could go on to create a storyboard and give your character some comic strip adventures!

Make a Nature Mandala!
Make a Nature Mandala!
A nature mandala is a circular pattern or design made from all natural materials (like a collage).
LOOK AT THE EXAMPLES above and then have fun making yours, whatever the weather!
If it's sunny why not make one outdoors - you could use twigs, sticks, pine cones, stones, pebbles, leaves, flowers, petals, feathers, seashells, seaweed or sand... get outdoors and see what you can find!
Or if you can't go outdoors, you could use fruit & veg (whole or sliced!); dried beans, pulses, nuts & seeds; flowers, feathers, seashells or pasta ... but ask a parent before raiding the kitchen cupboards!
You can make a mandala in almost any location... in the garden, at a nearby woodland or beach, or at home on the kitchen table... and it can be as tiny or as big as you dare, so get collecting & start designing!!
For more inspiration you could use Google Images to look at the work of land artists Andy Goldsworthy or James Brunt.
Send a photograph of your mandala to: wpolley@theroseland.co.uk
Tips on how to photograph your mandala:
Take your photo in a good light (daylight is best)
Take the photo from a central point to avoid distorting perspective - try to keep your design round rather than oval!
Take care not to cut off any edges
Make sure the image is in sharp focus
January 2021 Creative Arts Challenge - still open for entries!
Create your 'View from a Window'
View from a Window
Your challenge is to create a 'View from a Window' and we'd love to see yours! Your window view can be real or imagined, in natural or abstract colours... you can use any materials you like, from paint, pens and pencils to collage - you could even stitch it together in patchwork! So get creative! Please send in your artwork by 22nd February.
If you'd like some more inspiration, you could look at the colourful window paintings by Matisse on Google Images!
Send your artwork to: wpolley@theroseland.co.uk
Tips on how to capture a good image of your artwork:
Photograph your artwork in a good light (daylight is best)

Take care not to cut off any corners or edges
Make sure the image is in sharp focus
