Title: CENSORSHIP IN THE AUTONOMY
Freedom is often hailed as a fundamental right, yet do we truly experience freedom? The reality is that we live with restrictions on nearly every aspect of our lives—our thoughts, speech, and way of living. A striking example of this loss of freedom occurred during the first Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi from June 25th, 1975, to 1977. The Emergency imposed severe restrictions on the media, a crucial pillar of democracy, silencing their ability to speak freely, particularly when it came to criticizing the government.
The media, once a voice for the public, was now bound by censorship, effectively stripped of its duty to hold power accountable. One notable act of defiance during this time was the publication of an empty editorial in the Indian Express on June 28th, 1975, two days after a gap. This powerful gesture was the work of Ramnath Goenka, the founder and owner of the Indian Express. By publishing a blank page, Goenka showcased the severe repression of free speech under the Emergency and highlighted the media’s right to criticize and challenge authority—a right that was taken away during this period.
