Careers in Fishing

Ed Blake from Ventnor Haven Fishery talks about the opportunities in fishing industry...right on our doorstep!

"At Ventnor, we have created a market for selling the local catch. It is a profitable, growing industry however it is one hampered by an ageing workforce. Only in the last decade, the numbers of boats working from Ventnor and other island ports has shrunk from 30+ full time boats to just 5. The problem has been a lack of “youngsters” coming into the industry.

With getting people used to working at sea, the younger they start the better they are. Gaining things such as the suitable balance and strength is something that is hard to achieve once someone is fully grown. It is still possible, but a 14-16 year old will take to it in next to no time.

What we would like to do is reach out to this age bracket of young people and encourage them to take up a Saturday job or even just come down and take an interest in what is happening in their town.

The prospects for them are strong. An entry level crew can earn £18-25k easily and the right individual could make skipper in their early 20s and be on £40k+. Salaries like this are often believed to be for the university educated and not a job on the island, and we would like to show them how they can live comfortably still remaining in the island."
