AQUATIC ANIMAL WELFARE CONFERENCE 2020

NOV 2ND - NOV 6TH 2020

The virtual Aquatic Animal Welfare Conference 2020 is an international conference aimed at updating advocates on the latest science and campaigns from around the world on aquatic animal welfare. It will cover wild-caught fishes, farmed fishes, octopus and crustaceans. Through presentations, panels, regional strategy workshops, and networking opportunities, advocates can come together to learn, exchange ideas, develop new networks and establish plans for potential future collaborations.

This conference is open to those within the animal protection and environmental movement and scientists in the field. The conference is happening at a critical time to push fishes, crustaceans and octopus up the agenda in the animal protection movement.

In an attempt to make this a truly international conference we have speakers spanning the globe. And we are seeking participants from around the world as well. We hope that you will be able to join us for sessions in real-time where possible. While the conference is advertised in GMT, the recordings will be made available to those that can’t make the talks due to time zone differences and you will have the opportunity to submit further questions to the presenters afterwards, allowing interaction even if you are unable to attend in real-time.

The conference will run over 5 days from Monday 2nd November to Friday 6th November.

Organiser

This conference is organised by The Humane League UK and will take place online to ensure the health and safety of all participants and staff.

The Humane League UK works to end the abuse of animals raised for food. We want to create a world where animals are represented and spoken for in our society so that one day we will bring an end to the factory farming of animals. We are laser-focused in our approach and push for institutional change, pressuring big food companies to end the worst abuse in their supply chains alongside working on political advocacy and encouraging individuals to switch to a plant-based diet.

Most recently we’ve been involved in getting commitments from KFC, Greggs and Sodexo to improve the welfare of chickens raised for food. We have also helped gain cage-free commitments from all major food companies in the UK and work as part of the Open Wing Alliance to secure global commitments from multinational corporations. We are just beginning our work on farmed fishes and look forward to learning more during the conference.

SAFER SPACES POLICY FOR THE HUMANE LEAGUE EVENTS

Inclusivity stands as one of The Humane League UK’s core values, as we actively strive to promote and recognise principles of fairness and equity in relation to race, age, colour, disability, faith, religion, ancestry, national origin, citizenship, sex, sexual orientation, social class, economic class, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, and all other identities represented in our organisation and worldwide.

We must all work together to create a space within The Humane League’s events that is safe and comfortable for all individuals. Related to this, we have developed the following guidelines to address inappropriate behaviour at The Humane League UK’s events:

  • Inappropriate behaviour that is prohibited may include—but is not limited to—sexual harassment or behaviour that is racist, sizeist, sexist, transphobic, queerphobic, ableist, xenophobic, ageist, and homophobic. Inappropriate behaviour also includes unwillingness to listen to and learn from others’ experiences.

  • If you feel that you have been subject to inappropriate behaviour or discrimination, you should report the incident to The Humane League UK staff. Someone else may also report on your behalf. There will be no retaliation against the person who reports the behaviour.

  • If someone questions your behaviour, the event coordinator will speak with you. You may be given a verbal warning and you may be asked to leave the event. If inappropriate behaviour continues and/or is reported again, you may be prohibited from attending future The Humane League UK’s events.
