Kicking Things Off
Have someone review what the basic issue was in the Galatian churches. Why is Paul so concerned? What is the danger?
Getting Into It
Have you ever been tempted to depart from the faith, or have you ever strayed from the faith for a period of time or known someone who has? What was the situation that caused that? How did God keep you on track or bring you back?
Read Galatians 4:12-20
In Gal 4:12 Paul says to the Galatians, “Become as I am, for I also have become as you are.” What is he asking the Galatians to do? (see also Phil 3:7-9). How does becoming like Paul help keep them (or us) from straying from away from their faith?
In Gal 4:13-16 Paul talks about his physical condition when he first brought the gospel to the Galatians and how things have changed. When our relationship with other believers has been damaged, what are ways that we can repair or restore it?
In Gal 4:17-18 Paul reminds them of the ungodly motives of false teachers and the dangers of their false teaching. What are some of the contemporary false teachings or philosophies that tempt believers away from Christ?
The Parting Shot
In Galatians 4:19 Paul refers to something that protects us against legalism, (or world philosophies and false teachings). That protection comes from Christ being “formed” in us. What do you think that means? How does God do that? Can you say for yourself that Christ has been “formed” in you or is this still something that needs to take place?
Close by praying for any believers you know who may be straying from the faith. Pray also that God would continue to do the work of forming Christ in us.
