Kicking Things Off
Share about a time when someone made a meaningful promise that significantly impacted a decision you made. Why was that promise so impactful? How did you know you could trust that person?
Getting Into It
Read the passage, Gal. 3:15-18.
Someone summarize what have we seen in Galatians 3 so far? Recall the primary issue that the Apostle Paul is addressing in his letter to the Galatians.
Starting in v. 15, Paul uses a human example to describe the significance of covenants. Why do you think he uses a human example?
In v. 16, he shifts his view from manmade covenants to God’s covenant. Explain what we know about God’s covenant with Abraham? (Read Gen 12:1-3)
What do we know about Abraham prior to this covenant?
What does this tell us about the nature of God’s promise?
What does this tell us about the character of God?
What point does Paul make in v. 17?
Read Gal 3:18 again. What did God give to Abraham by a promise? Why is Paul bringing all of this up for the Gentile Christians in Galatia? What major theological truth is Paul communicating?
How does relying on God's promise, rather than our efforts, influence the way that we view our relationship with God?
Pastor Brian reiterated the point that we are justified by a gift of God’s grace and the assurance of His promise. What are some of the ways we struggle to have faith in God’s promise? How does that struggle manifest itself in your life? Try sharing a specific example.
The Parting Shot
How can we walk through life together to encourage one another to trust in His promise?
Spend some time praying for each other on this.
