Nursery Curriculum

In the Early Years we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum which is specially designed for children aged 0 – 5 years.

The children will access the EYFS Curriculum’s seven areas of learning.

Three prime areas:

· Communication and Language

· Physical Development

· Personal Social and Emotional Development.

The prime areas help a child develop skills in the four specific areas:

· Literacy

· Mathematics

· Understanding the World

· Expressive Arts and Design

Prime Area: Communication and Language Development

This area involves giving the children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Prime Area: Physical Development

This area involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Prime Area: Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others, to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings, to understand appropriate behaviour in groups and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Specific Area: Literacy

This area of development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

Specific Area: Mathematics

This area involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, spaces and measures.

Specific Area: Understanding the world

This area involves guiding the children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Specific Area: Expressive Arts and Design

This area involves enabling the children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design and technology.

We construct a curriculum that is responsive to the children we teach. Our children learn through themes/topics which reflect their interest and needs.

Through this curriculum we encourage our children to play and explore, be active learners and be creative and critical thinkers.

Adults play a crucial role in stimulating and supporting each child’s learning. Each child is valued for his/her uniqueness.

We provide a variety of learning opportunities. Children learn through adult guided activities and child initiated activities.

We help children develop social skills such as turn taking and independence. Activities are planned for indoors and outdoors.

We encourage parents to be involved in their child’s learning. As well as an introductory meeting about the Nursery and Reception classes, parents are invited to a personal meeting with the class teacher. We inform parents of topics and themes we are working on. We also hold parents evenings and have an open evening/afternoon where a child is able to show their parents his/her work.

We keep a ‘Foundation Stage Profile’ for each child which parents contribute to. Parents are encouraged to note and share observations they have made of their child.

We hold meetings about how we introduce and teach reading and phonics. Story Chest, Reading 360 and Oxford Reading Tree are the schemes we use. When introduced to Reading 360 each child is heard read in school by an adult every day.

Children are introduced to phonics in the Nursery class with Letterland. The Letters and Sounds document and order for introducing sounds is used in the Reception class.

We reflect on a child’s work and conversation. This helps us make informed decisions to plan next steps to meet learning and development needs.

We use Development Matters to help guide and support us throughout the year.​
