The Counselors at CORE Community School offer support to students in grades 6-12, their parents/guardians, and faculty. We are dedicated to supporting the whole student – we believe students are more than just a sum of their parts and require a dynamic approach to help them evolve into conscientious, happy, successful human beings. With this strength-based approach in mind, we look intentionally at how they can grow academically, socially, and physically within the classroom and as global citizens.
What We Are Able to Offer
Individual counseling check-ins may be arranged at the request of a student, parent, teacher, or other staff member, and are short-term in nature. The counselor may speak with students about issues such as friendship, difficulty in the classroom, conflict resolution, anger, grief and loss, and other varied topics. We are available throughout the school day to support any emerging needs and provide respite and solution-focused skills. On occasion, we may offer regular weekly mini-check-ins for students that need a little additional support to maintain a healthy connection with school while reinforcing coping and conflict resolution skills.
Due to the nature of a school environment, one of the goals of the counselors is to assist the student in being able to engage in their school day. For students that require more intensive one on one support that is outside the scope of what can be done within our school environment, the counselors are happy to provide referrals to outside specialists to ensure that students can have their needs met in a safe space outside of their school setting.
Throughout the year, social emotional lessons (SEL) are brought to life in advisory groups to explore important developmentally appropriate topics. Topics vary based on ever evolving needs of each individualized group. We also facilitate a CORE Wellness Day as part of our SEL programming. This is a time where we take learning beyond the classroom creating a conference-like atmosphere with educational sessions focusing on six dimensions of wellness -Physical (Environmental), Emotional, Intellectual, Occupational, Social, and Spiritual. Our goal is for students to understand the importance of holistic wellness and cultivate a growth mindset.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a vital component of counseling and helps to build a trusting relationship with the students. Occasions may arise when confidentiality must be legally and ethically broken, and the counselors will work with the child to inform the necessary parties. The counselors and other school staff often communicate with private therapists and physicians to be holistic in our process. Release of Information forms are available below for families who desire the staff at CORE Community School to be in contact with other professionals.
Family Empowerment
Collaborating with families is an important ingredient in achieving student success. CORE offers a variety of empowerment events for families. These include:
Coffee with the Counselors (CWC): This is a time for parents and counselors to come together to support each other. Each month, we will explore a theme and provide various resources, such as relevant articles.
Other Education-Based Events: Our hope is we can come together and improve our community in a wrap-around way. To do this, we recognize that knowledge not only comes from within CORE, but also beyond CORE. We look forward to welcoming experts within and outside of our community to bring important topics to life for you.
